Auto hubs info

Hey peeps, I just bought a 87 model. It has auto locking hubs. What is the deal with changing over to manual locking hubs? What is the best product? Price? Does Toyota make a change over kit?

toyota hubs

all you have to do is unbolt your auto hubs and bolt on the manual ones. i recomend the factory aisin hubs they hold up the best. warn makes them to. go to your local salvage yard and get a used factory set from a 86-95 toyota truck or i got some i'll sell for $60 + shipping.

Definately get rid of the auto hubs - they will unlock everytime you backup - essentually you have 4wd only in forward gears.

4WD only in the forward gears? I have auto hubs and my 4WD works just fine in reverse. I have never heard that explaination before. Are yout talking about over time due to wear and tear?

No, you don't have auto hubs, you have add with the plate thingy. Autohubs are the type that require you to backup to disengage 4wd. So, when in 4wd and you back up, they disengage momentarily. When in 2wd, they disengage fully.

Try this post: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&threadid=7499

That should clear things up, read the links to off-road.com and 4x4wire. If it doesn't help let me know.

Two great articles.
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/aisin/
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autohub/

Autohubs were used between 1984 and 1989, and some other Toyotas came with ADD, or Aisin manual hubs.
It was all up to Toyota.

My '90 truck I use to have came with the good Aisin manual hubs, while Jim's '89 SR5 came with ADD.

Rabid, you have ADD if you don't have to get out and lock your hubs by twisting the dial like I do.

ADD is locked in all the time, and puts stress on parts.
This was discussed just two days ago in a hub post here somewhere, and it has good info in it.

It is always best to go with manual hubs.
That frees up stress on parts, and the parts only spin when locked in.

Hey believe me, before I got my 4Runner I was not online looking for info and was clueless about the different hubs.

When I had my '90 truck I was online, just not on forums.
I thought all Toyotas had manual hubs.

I was just not into the "technical jargon aspect" of it when I had it.
Once I started surfing for info after I bought this rig, the info started coming in so fast it was overwhelming.

manual hubs

My 86 4Runner had manual hubs and I used it for sking at Cyrstal Mt. I'd lock the hubs before I got into the snow areas and then they were set to go when I needed to shift into 4wd. Same on the way down, I's shift out of 4wd and then when it was convenient to do so unlock the hubs. This was easy. I now have ADD and one of my mods to do is shift ( ) to manul hubs as many have done.
