Looking for a pointer to a stainless muffler that is super quiet (and it probably won't be a free flow). I've been running my 22re for about 15 years with a downey header, 2.5" exhaust all the way, no cat and a cheapo packed muffler. I might have lost a little backpressure with this setup, but I think it might be somewhat similar to those that run a cat with a free-flow muffler (except that my backpressure is achieved more at the muffler instead of the cat). Not running a cat because they start way too many fires in this part of the country.

I've been real happy with the performance but am tired of replacing mufflers (which rust out every couple of years). The latest muffler gave up the ghost (rusted) and dropped when I hit a badger hole. I tried an 18" downey stainless free-flow muffler, but it is too loud for my tastes (since I don't have the cat to muffle some of the sound) and I'm not sure if I will have the backpressure I need. Anyone know of any stainless mufflers that are super quiet or am I stuck with aluminized?

 

I have an old Borla s/s muffler that is fairly quiet. I've had it on a VW diesel for about 10 years and plan on moving it to my 4Runner that has a Flowmaster on it now. The Borla has an s-shaped thru-tube, that is perforated and the mufler is filled with fiber.

 

I just got the stainless flowmaster 50 delta yesterday. I haven't put it in yet but I hope I got the right one. After going through all the forums, it seems to be split down the middle between magnaflow and flowmaster.
