85 starting issue

I just swapped for a 85 22r 4x4. It was running fine a couple of months ago but has been setting till today. now it will only run if you pump the gas pedal like a madman. Put on a ne fuel filter and checked the cam driven pump, it pumps just fine. Was thinking bout a weber carb or for double the money converting to LP. Would be gratefull for any help as this is my first toyata.

sounds carb related if your getting good fuel. The fuel may be old, try some new gas. Can you drive it? if so, I'd dump some seafoam (search and you'll find posts on it) into the gas, highly concentrated and then drive it like you stole it. That'd clean the jets in the carb. Some spray carb cleaner may help as well

Check the idle cut solenoid. It is located by the choke on the carburetor and has two leads coming off it(black and white wire). pull off your air cleaner and then have someone turn the key on and off and listen for a click from the solenoid every time the ignition is turned on and off(dont need to start it). It you got nothing try turning the ign on and tapping it. Sometimes they get stuck or go bad and it wont run unless you keep giving it gas. If the solenoid works then I would just rebuild your carb. A kit is about 50 bucks and its fairly easy to rebuild

oh yeah, forgot about that solenoid. Actually, do you have to pump it, or will it not idle? I had that solenoid quit (acutally was fuse blown) in my truck, and it just wouldn't idle. At all. But it would run good if you held the gas down steady.

Will try the solenoid deal.... have to pump like hell to keep it running. Hate to re-build... me and carbs get along like kriptonite and superman...
