85' 4x4 gas tank?

i was wondering what the capacity of my tank is. I just bought the truck 2 weeks ago...tried to run it as low as i could, but forgot gas can, so filled her up...17.98gallons, and needle was around 1/8. Could this be a 20gallon? the only info i've seen says 17.2.

Damn dude, I try to run mine pretty close to empty and when I fill up it usually says something like 15 gallans. I guess I have a ways left to go.

what does it say in the manual? is it a 4runner, or an extended cab truck. in 87 (i'm almost positive its the same as 85) the 4runner and short wheelbase truck have 17.2 gal. tanks, while the extended cab truck has a 19.3 gal. tank. And just for reference. when the fuel light comes on in the dash, it means there is approx. 3 gallons left in the tank.

its a 85 regular cab long bed 22RE. I filled her up again today after going 220miles, gauge was at about 1/8th maybe alittle higher and it took 14.75gallons. So it must be a 17.2 . I just try to top her off assing about half gallon

proabably so, if you really want to test it, carry a 1 gal. gas can with you, drive it till you run out put the 1 gal in, go fill up and see how many gallons it takes + the one in the can and there you go. I usually go by the low fuel light, since my guage doesn't work. I can go till the trip meter reads 280ish, but I usually stop before then for good measure. Don't forget to factor in bigger tires if you're calculating your mileage. according to the figures you gave you only got 14.9 MPG. I average 19. I'll try and find the thread that Flamedx4 had the numbers for calculating the difference.

ok, found it: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/16-mpg-80-4wd-5-speed-71027/

by the way, welcome to the board.

It is a 17.2 unless you have the long wheel base, xtra cab and longbeds, then it is 19.2
