85 4runner torque rod question

What is the main purpose of the torque rod? Took mine out tonight to have old bushings pressed out and new ones pressed in. I need to drive it to work tomorrow, so took it around the block and the ride feels nice without it in. So I was just kind of wondering about it.

It's to keep the axle centered under hard braking and acceleration.

Scuba you amaze me. You are correct. Its more for hard braking but if you have some big power under the hood I guess it could affect acceleration.

Mine is off since rolling the truck and twisting the mount on the axle housing. I don't think I'll ever need to put it back on. I can't remember ever having a bad experience braking.
