85 4runner sitting for over 10 years Q&A

My dad has a stock 85 4runner in great condition that has not been running for about 10 years. good news it has been sitting in a garage for the last 7 years. He is going to buy a new motor but what i would like to know is what all other parts he should buy to make it his daily driver. I know new tires, brakes, lines, and servicing the axles and draining fuel tank. What else should he do to make it a daily driver? Any help would be appreciated!

Change all the fluids, ALL OF THEM! Transmission, transfer case, and differentials.

I would flush the radiator an put a new themostat if it has sat that long i would imagine the radiator has built up sum gunk over the years an the old thermostat is probably stuck open or closed. Could save you a blown head gasket in your new motor

Welcome first off New fuel filter, same as they said, clean air intake of debris( dirt and dust mainly), grease chassis, inspect the belts, insure all electrical is clean and tight and definitely if not replace, clean the battery connections.

I've always ran into problems with power steering after letting a car sit so I just get a new pump and hose =)
Good luck!

Hello, welcome! First I would download the FSM (factory service manual), you can get it free. This truck has the potential to be a great DD but you will have your work cut out for you. Seals dry out in time and cause leaks and leaks can lead to other problems. FSM will give you factory how to which is far superior to Haynes or Chilton.

x2 on what was said above. About fluids, belts, and hoses. I wouldn't swap engines until you try it. A factory motor is superior to a rebuilt and may only need a few easy to replace gaskets. This is my two cents, the truck will require elbow grease and basic know-how.

Anything that touches gas. And if you keep the motor it wouldnt hurt to have it bored out. What caused it to stop running 10years ago?
