85 4runner 22re having problems tuning
#1
So after I replaced the head gasket a while ago I put everything back together and could not get the darn thing to run right. I posted for some ideas and got some good one. My main problem is that the thing runs but it runs like crap. The timing seems to want to be off by almost 20 degrees or that is what it shows on the indicator. If I try to change it to the right timing it doesn't run. The original problem that I had was a coolant leak at the head/block junction that leaked along the entire length of the engine. I am thinking now that that problem was the water pump but haven't tackled that yet. If anyone has any ideas about the engine not running right please let me know. I am pretty sure I have everything plugged in (i.e.-vacuum,cables,sensors) but if anyone has a vacuum diagram electronically that would be great. Thanks in advance.

I had a similiar issue after replacing my head gasket:

So if I read that thread correctly I should stick the distributor in so that the rotor points to a little past at top dead center or a little before. Right now everything is aligned right in a row. When the crankshaft is at 0 degrees, the cam sprocket mark is straight up at 12:00 and the rotor as right at the #1 cylinder. I did jump the test connector and it actually makes it worse then. My engine is running very closely to what is listed in the thread (sorry forgot names already)...meaning it runs alright if I keep my foot in it and if I'm driving it the thing has power...I mean I could fish tail around corners in the snow so it had to have some power. This thing is driving me nuts. It's like right there but it just doesn't want to run correctly. Time to get the BFH out!!! Ha! Ha! Ha! Thanks to all those that responded and I'll let you know what happens when I get a chance to work on it.

It sounds like you have it set up correctly. If the engine is at TDC, the crank should point to 0, the cam dowell should be at or near 12 oclock, and the distributer rotor should point at the #1 plug termnial (top left if you are looking at dist. cap). How are your valves?
It just sounds so much like the problem I was having.
