85 22RE Drowned and wont Crank, Help.

Hey all,

The story is, I fell asleep driving, went off the side of the road and ended up with passenger side of the truck under water. Water level ended up getting to the center console. We got it out and got it started, drove for 30min and there it sat. After 2 months, went to start it and just heard a click coming from the passenger side kick board. Any ideas what might be the problem?

The click is the relay behind the passenger side kick panel, you have your ECM behind there also and it may have gotten wet and have some corrosion in it now, I would take it out, take the covers off and take a look.

Although it should still crank with a wet ECM, check power at battery, check for power at starter from battery and check the power to the small wire that is on the solenoid when someone is turning the key, if you do not have power going to the smaller (brown wire IIRC) then you need to trace up from there to find your problem, could be your relay, could be Clutch safety switch, get a copy of the FSM and a multimeter.

The click your hearing is from the core relay, it can go bad on its own or from getting wet. Check all of your fuses and the relay, as well as the computer.

What is the core relay? Are you referring to the COR (circuit open relay) relay?

Thanks for the replies, I gotta find some time to diagnose the problem. Any other ideas, please keep them coming. I'll go down the check list and update as I go. I need to get it up and running so I can get the whole motor rebuilt along with suspension and tranny.

Hey just an update:
Checked and replaced with new correct Interstate battery
Checked ignition switch on steering column.
Checked starter +batt and ignition wire
Everything works electrically...
Turns out the starter was bad. Must have gotten water in it and corroded. Replaced it and it fired right up!! Totally stoked to have it running again.

Now the question is, should I go crate motor from LC or rebuild with Engnbldr parts. I got a quote from a machine shop and he was going to charge me $2200 just on labor. That doesn't include removal and install of motor. Which I was quoted $1400. Shoot that's $3600 just in labor, no parts yet.

real-life top gear episode haha. that is part of the reason i went back to the first gen 4runner.
