84 Toyota pickup timing issues.

Hey everyone,

This is my first time posting here, but I've been lurking around for a few weeks now. So I've recently obtained a 1984 Toyota pickup that was sitting for a little over 7 years. I'm pretty new to the whole fixing up cars thing, and I thought this would be the perfect project to learn on. I've gotten everything tuned up to my knowledge, new spark plugs, air filter, oil/oil filter, fuel filter, and a new distributor cap.

Now I've moved on to getting the ignition timing set right. To my understanding, you disconnect the hoses from the distributor advance and block the ends of them. Under the hood it says the timing should be set to 5* btdc, and with a lot of research I've found that with the houses off it should be 5* and with them attached it should be twelve. I can easily get it to 5* with them off, but as soon as I hook the hoses back up it shoots way past the 12* mark. I have no clue what the problem could be as I am not very familiar with any of this at all, I am completely new to this! Also, could the timing being way off have to do with me not being able to get the truck past 55mph? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

make sure your hoses are hooked up correctly.
