Remove or Replace Catalytic Converter
1985 22RE 4Runner
Live in Florida. No emission requirments.
I got the original Catalytic Converter still. 200K+. Have not inspected it yet. The question assumes it is clogged up and impeding exhaust flow.
Should I....
1.) Remove and not replace
2.) Replace with OEM
3.) Replace with High Flow Cat
I want the exhaust to run it's best. I don't know enough about back pressure or exhaust, or how that will effect performance.
I prefer the noise to not annoy me or other peeps on the road. I don;t mind a little exhaust tone, but I don;t wanna be 'that guy', if you know what I mean.
But in the end I am mostly concerned with optimal function and performance.
I have LC Exhaust Headers and the rest of the exhaust is stock, with a few leaks
Not ready to do anything yet, but addressing the exhaust system is on the horizon.

one test for a clogged cat is to use a laser heat gun, measuring temps right before and right after the input/output of the cat, at maybe 2500 rpm, so it's nice and hot.
if the temp differences are starting to approach 100 degrees, there could be a problem with the cat.

Ever followed a car around with a cat? Gives you a headache. I'd rather no be 'that guy' than the noise violator. Just go with whatevers cheap, believe the 49 state magnaflow cats aren't that much. While you're at it, do a full 2.25 inch exhaust, wake those headers up.

Now, you should investigate whether you actually need a cat, my 81 has close to 188k and it passed CA smog last year, so age and mileage doesn't mean its thrashed yet.

I agree. When i had a cat on my exhaust my truck smelled far worse than it does now. I have a 2.5 inch exhaust that starts from the stock header flange I cut. I coupled that with a cheap Thrush Turbo muffler. Sounds great! Is not too loud. heck mine sounds better than my friends barely has a Toyota sound anymore...could be the camshaft though?

They run like craps without a cat. I mean awful been there done that. They need exhaust velocity.
Had a 22re with a flowmaster and a gutted cat. Sounded good bit no pull you could tell it was crapping all the power out the tail pipe. Put a cat back under it and it actually had a power band again.

If you do remove it don't punch it out unless you don't want $90 dollars from the scrap yard. Sell it and use that money to make a straight pipe and buy whatever muffler you want.
3.0 in my pickup has a cat runs better with a cat. I tried it with and without a cat. my 302 4runner is gonna dump out the headers because I can tune the mix through the carb.

Let's be realistic, the 22re isn't going to magically start making any noticeable amount of power by removing the cat (if it is functioning properly). Anyone who says otherwise is suffering from the 'I did a mod, it must be better, I know it!' Syndrome.

I was also going to say, though my '90 3.0 sounded good runnin headers and a hollowed out cat, in retrospect, I probably would have benefited form a little more back pressure that the cat would have given it...
