Skid plates from the factory on the older runners?

I just purchased a 22R 5 spd 1984 4Runner 4WD, and want to get it up to par before the 22 of this month...

No skid plates though....It has a little skid under the transfercase... but nothing up front under the engine/tranny...

Anybody got a stock one that they have upgraded with budbuilt or anything they need to get rid of?

Let me know if there were stock skids, and if so, any idea where I can get one?? Thanks!!

 

There is sort of a stock skidplate thing that used to go under the radiator and maybe a little under the front of the engine IIRC, it just sat flat on the frame, but my truck never had it and I wheel mine on a regular basis. No one makes after market skids for it because no one runs it, I wouldn't worry about it. I have wheeled some hard stuff, both stock and once lifted and I have never hit anything up there. If you want some armor for the front end, get some armor that covers the diff, you will hit that. If you hit it enough, the ring gear can touch the housing, which obviously is bad. I picked up an 8" steel pipe cap for $30 that I cut in half and used front and rear, no complaints thus far.
Otherwise, if you are really looking to spend money on skids, get a t-case skid and crossmember, definitely worth it.

I know your a big fan of body damage, but I assume you want your engine running, so I'm game for buying into no skid plates. lol.

The SFA Nissans of that era had a really nice skid plate lower valance thing wth the tow hooks poking though....

Dunno how beefy it was.

The guy who had the Nissan lost the truck in a total (pegged an unlit, non reflectored flatbed tractor trailer which was parked *across* two lanes of a highway attempting to make an illegal U turn).

Since I wasnt really into trucks at the time I wasnt paying a whole lot of attention.

 

Yeah I don't mind body damage, but I prefer to keep the engine functional, haha. Honestly I have NEVER hit the radiator or engine on anything and I have never had a stick or something get up in there. It's ok, when I first got it, since I was of the IFS school previously, my first question was about skidplates too, haha.


As for pics, I don't know if I ever got any purposefully, I will see if I can find some that you can see it.

Thanks a lot intrepid. now I just have to find a welder, and an 8" steel pipe cap... i might just try to 'trail weld' it on there (2 batteries, and a set of jumper cables and a welding stick)

 

I have the stock plate off my '85 that I haven't used in years. Probably run about $20 to ship depending on distance.
