4WD makes awful noise

I just scored a 84 yota longbox, it's in pretty sweet condition but in 4x4 it makes an awful noise when I take my foot off the throttle or when I am traveling at low speed or near 1st gear idle. Should I assume that it's the hubs? It drives fine in 2 wheel, otherwise truck seems minty with 150 km and no rust. I hear these solid axles are supposed to be bulletproof what do you experts say?

Thanks a lot,
Rosludos

Sounds like hubs may need rebuilt. Bearing maybe going or gone.

If I did both hubs would I want to upgrade anything?

Not really anything to upgrade. Maybe a pair of these...

...but honestly, no real reason to do so in an all stock axle.

Lots of good rebuild info here. Good links within some posts too.

And as mentioned, check those wheel bearings and either replace or clean and repack as indicated.

you could lock the transfer case in 4lo and not lock the hubs in to see if it still makes the noise. if not its your hubs, if so its some thing else.
