i think i might jus put a set of 35's and see what happens. i know ill rarely use 5th around where i live. and 4wd high would be a joke. if its jus terrible ill go with 4.88 gears. im in college gettin my automotive degree. and a fellow 2nd year student rebuilt a set of toyota axles. and i have an extra set so i can talk to him about price range.

My 85 is auto with stock 430s and 33" tires. It's a major pain on the highway shifting in and out of overdrive. When I change the gears, I'm going with 529s and sticking with 33" tires. I did have the opportunity to drive a rig with 22r converted to EFI, 529s and 36" tires. I seriously doubt that you could ever get that thing into 5th gear. There was just no power whatsoever. Another rig I got to test out had a 22re that was somewhat tired, 529s and 35" tires. Again, I seriously doubt you could ever get it into 5th gear.
In other words, 488s will work, but you won't have the power and will be down shifting every two minutes.

i have 5.29's and 36x13.5 iroks and i love how it feels it worked well with my 35's also when i ran the 35's i averaged 17mpg and with the 36's and more weight added i get 16mpg on average

Ok, this is a bit OT, but I have been wondering just how much of a difference steelies versus alloys makes. It's unsprung weight, but it's close to the hub. But with an engine that only produces 105hp? I have stock 16" alloys on my 85, and haven't experimented. Wondering if anyone has switched between the two and noticed a large difference.

I think tire type, width (aggressive tread vs. on road) would make a bigger difference than wheel weight.
I went from a 15x8 steel wheel 35x12.5, to a 15x7 oem alloy 33x10.5, but I also changed to an all-terain at the same time so the tire probably made more of a difference. I went from 16-17 MPG to 19-20 MPG and that is AFTER calculating for the smaller tire dia. so those #'s are accurate.

What I'd like to do is go from 35s on steel wheels to 37s on alloys while getting the same power and mpgs. But I'm leaning toward thinking that it won't happen. Still, in the rig I'm talking about, I have the 3.4L swap and 529s. You'd think it would push 37s easily. I guess I'll just have to try it for myself.

If you crunch the numbers, 4.88s with 33s is the same as stock (28s with 4.10s). 5.29s with 35s also duplicates stock setup. But tire weight, tread pattern, rim weight, vehicle weight (exocage, bumpers, winch), induction type and engine condition all make a big difference in my experience. My carbed 85 PU on steelies and 33/12.50 radial Swamps with 4.88s struggles on hills. Motor has only 35K on it too, but the carb is dying. My buddy's '89 4R has 35/14.50 bias Swamps on steel beadlocks, 4.88s, serious exocage, lots of lift (wind resistance), something like 240K on the clock, but it has EFI! It's OK on the street. Not great, but bearable. So it's a try it and see thing to an extent. GL!
