4.88 gears + 35's ???
i have an 84 toyota single cab. flatbed. i have a one off 8 inch lift. built by a local toyota freak.
And im wantin to jus run 35's rite now with 4.88 gears. im wantin my rig to be economical plus wheelable. what kind of mpg's will i be lookin at with those gears and tires with my stock 22r? thanks for any help

I run 5.29s in mine with 35 x 12.5's and I have no real issues with it except on hills but I think 5.71's would help on the hills in 5th 4.88 I just don't think are going to make you real happy I would say 5.29/5.71's

I installed 4.88s with my 22re/W56 back when I had 33s. Although I did like the power, the RPMs were a little higher then I liked. I would routinely get a corrected 17 or 18MPG. Now that I bumped up to 35s, I get a corrected 20MPG with pretty good highway power. I do have a recently rebuild engine though, so that helps. Either way, I prefer my 4.88/35s combo. Plus you can find factory 4.88s cheap! YMMV

Economical and wheelable ain't happening.
Fuel economy is based more on the efficiency of your motor than your gears in your diffs.
If your motor is not running in tip top shape and gets poor mileage anyway, gears won't help it.

I get 16-19 mpg with 5.29's and 35x12.5's and that's about 2/3+ highway driving. Unless I'm doing 70-75 mph, I'm shifting down to 4th to go up the slightest hills. On the back roads where I'm only doing 50 mph, I don't even use 5th gear unless I'm going down hill. I cant imagine having taller gears... but then again I have a gutless 22R.
I have 33x10.5's on the truck now and 5th gear is very usable @ 50 mph but I'm not doing 70-75 mph on the highway any more, I keep it around 65 mph tops (on my speedo which is prob more like 60 mph in reality due to gear/tire ratio) and only getting a couple more MPG. Even then I'm not sure if I'm getting any better after calculating in the fact that I'm getting more tire rotations with a 33" tire and that makes my odometer turn more times driving the same distance than if I had the 35's on the truck (not to mention slightly higher engine rpm on highway). I still haven't figured out how to calculate that one exactly lol.
At the end of the day, we're driving lifted bricks that we love so I bend over at the gas pump and can't complain

so if i keep it 4.10 and go with 35s what kinda mpgs am i lookin at? 15-17? my 22r runs good. i goin hopefully this week to get a carb kit. plugs wires cap rotor button etc. so it'll def be runnin good.

Way too many variables on these trucks, so everyone's experience will be different.
I have an 84 4runner with 35's and 4.88's, and it can pull 20 on the freeway, and I use 5th gear all of the time. However, on big hills, I am downshifting.
The motor had a weber 38, header and a cam when I first bought it and it ran great.
When I did a rebuild, I added an offenhauser intake and some engnbldr valves, and it was noticeable with not as much downshifting on the hills.
I have a fair amount of extra metal around the truck, so its heavier too.
The perfect size tire would be a very tall 33 or 34, in my opinion, but the 35's work well for me.

So just think about 35's...
I just put a set of 34x10.50 super swampers on the truck and im curious to see what my gas mileage is going to end up like...
I guess we'll see!!!

any suggestions on regearing my 4runner with a 3.0 and 33x12.5 . i was thinking 5.29's but im wondering what kind of gas milages and top speed and how much better it will be for wheelin

The 4.88 gears will work just fine for you. I have an 86 4Runner with 37'' tires and 4.88 gears and i don`t have any problems at all. A couple of things that will also help you out would be a header and an AFM swap.

If your truck has an automatic trans then go with 5.29`s, if its a manual trans then go with 4.88`s.

Well the 4.88 and the 35 is answered. I have a brand new crate motor all stock and 31's with the 4.10's. I was thinking up grading some time in the future to 4.88 but it sounds like it will be a little low side. At 75 to 80MPH it does feel like a out house on wheels, Oh it is lifted 3 inches and I have a 5spd. My mileage is 17 to 20MPG with the set up I have and the truck is gutless on any incline. It sounds like a 4.29 or 4.55 would be better for me with my tires? I want power and mileage. I have another rig to wheel off road.
