4:88 gears with 35 "
So I got a great deal On some nice 35 " tiers . But now ( as you probably already know ) My truck hates me . They don't rub , So I'm going to do a gear swap . Would 4:88 be good ? And what company should I get them from . I hear Richmond gears was all right , Well at least for muscle cars . Thanks Aj

I was thinking this same thing, I already have 4.88's but will need new tires soon. I could clear 35x10.50's and was wondering how it would drive with the 4.88's. I do not want to and can not aford to do another gear swap.

4.88s or 5.29s with both work. 4th/5th gear depends on how fresh your 22RE runs.

I have 4.88 gears and 37'' tires on my 86 4Runner and they work just fine, my cousin also has an 86 4Runner with dana 60`s front and rear and he has 39'' tires on his 4Runner with 4.11 gears, and neither of us have any problems with the gears we have. We also both have duel cases, so that may help a little.

Thanks Guys . I was told 4.88s would be better for 35's and 5.29s if I was planing on getting bigger than 35's . My 22re is pretty old and tired . so I'm also thinking of giving her new exhaust and headers . As soon as my mustang sells ill have some $$ to trow into her .

I run 4.88's on 315/75r16's no problem all day long with 5th gear on the interstate and accelerate to pass people without downshifting. I'm not even a 1/10th off on the odometer(as far as the numbers go it's actually between numbers). They're fine on the trail, though 5.29's would give me a little better crawl ratio. I haven't done much crawlin' so I'm good!

Noob on here and i have no idea how to work this site so im sorry if im digging this one back up to rob it but is there anyone on here that sells gears at a good price?i dont want to pay new price for 4:88 gears on my 89 toyota 22re auto 4x4. She sits on 33" and has only 159k on the whole truck.but has no power at take off.i think i have 4:56 gears.does that sound like enough gear for my truck because it sure doesnt feel like it.last owner could have put a different rear end in it than the sticker says inside the door.im going to check the ratio tonight by counting the drive shaft turns..any input is apreciated.again sorry if im not posting corectly!im lost on here!

You prob have like 4.10s or 4.30s(which I think came in 3rd gen trucks). You could maybe find a set of factory 4.88s which would help your giddy up. I got three rear factory 4.88 3rd members for my '84(solid axle front) for like $100 bucks from my local Pullapart. I left the front IFS diffs in all of them since I don't have IFS....
Factory IFS 4.88s came in 2nd gen 4runners with factory 31" tires and tow package. Code on door tag is G144 for 4.88. There is a kicker though... You can't use any other gear sets with these housings. It's a thin ring gear since they offset the pinion to accomplish the ratio. Or something like that....
I presume that the Runner in your avatar isn't the one we are referring to? Cause I'm pretty sure that's a 90-95.5 body.

You're gonna want 5.29's with 35's, That's what I'm running and I have enough trouble trying to hold 5th gear on the highway. If there is a headwind, its back to 4th gear

When I refer to the used 4.88s I got, I am referring to the complete 3rd member. Which, in my opinion, is a lot easier to swap out than setting up new gears. Yes, the new gear set is just a little more expensive, but include install kit, bearings, most likely labor to set up, etc, you have far exceeded a used 3rd from a yard.
Granted, you don't know how it was used, but you can generally look at oil condition, tooth wear, tightness, even wear pattern and get a decent idea if it will be ok. Just my cheap opinion...

i daily drove my 84 with 4:10's and 35's for 3 years. with a welded rear end.
my 22r was fresh, with a cam and header, but i had 0 problems with that set up. I was able to use 5th on the freeway.
I would go 4:56 or 4:88. 5:29 is to low and the pinion is tiny. seen lots of broken 5:29 thrids.......
