22RE Staring Problem

I have a problem with my starter sounds like contacts so I changed the contacts same problem so I changed the whole starter same problem I checked the relay and it looks good to me. When I turn the key it makes a clicking sound like the battery is dead but I know its not. I have to keep turning the key over and over sometimes for 5-10 mins and finally it will turn over blowing smoke out the tail pipe. Does anybody know what the problem could be. Thanks

have you checked the teeth on the flywheel? pull the starter and turn the motor over by hand while inspecting the gear ring.

Perform a simple voltage test at the starter when you get the click:

If you see more than a 1/2 volt drop to the starter solenoid you may have an electrical issue upstream from the starter, some options to fix those on the web page below:

Mine did the same thing. I replaced the starter and all is well.

Do the simple voltage check I posted a link to earlier and you will know. And not all 22REs have starter relays, I know my '85 does not (at least as it came from the factory, I later installed one).

New or rebuilt? If rebuilt, don't necessarily assume it is not the problem. Have heard of quite a few occasions where "rebuilt" starters were not totally rebuilt. I think that many times, the core is brought in and tested and if it seems OK at that time, they get cleaned and repainted and put in a box. Not uncommon for a rebuilt starter to have worn contacts in the solenoid.

Doing that simple voltage test (under load) posted earlier will tell you where to look for the cause of the problem:
