Timing Chain replacement..

Ok so.. You guys think I should replace my timing chain?

A week ago I started my truck and it ran fine but as it started to warm up, it started this rattling business. At low RPM it was quite apparent. I pulled into a wash rack and opened the hood. I revved the engine and it sounded like the rattling is coming from the front of the engine compartment. There is some kind of fluid lightly splattered on the axle in front. I can't tell what it is though..

Someone had suggested my PS pump died but I don't think thats the case. I don't see anywhere on the box or pump where there is any chance of leaking PS fluid.

Another someone had suggested the timing chain guides broke and it's rattling against the cover.

After reading some of the other threads about TC replacement... My engine does kind of sound like a diesel at first until it warms up (i dont know if this is related..) The rattling doesn't go away when it warms up (i don't know why it would if the guides broke).

Is it correct that I should pull off the valve cover and look to see if the guides are toast or the chain itself?

If this is the case, when it comes time to replace the chain, should I pull the head too and get the gasket while I'm there? I've never done a job like this before but I want to for the experience. What else should I do while I've got that much of the engine pulled apart? Do you guys recommend pulling the oil pan to clean it out too? Can I pull the oil pan without removing suspension parts?

if I do have to remove suspension parts.. I've got a set of rear leaves from the old owner of the truck. I've heard I can put these on the front. Do you guys recommend it, and how is it done? Do I need to change some components for that to happen?

Sorry for the longwindedness but I just want my truck to work right so I can paint it and make it look *****sweeeet*****

Oh yeah, if I do have to replace it.. I'll do a write up if one isn't done already.

Oh and what kind of gasket should I expect for the head? Paper? rubber? RTV ()? if it's paper do you guys recommend the use of Hylomar to prevent the paper gasket from sticking?
