22R timing issues

Okay, so me and my dad finally finished replacing gaskets in his toyota 4-runner 22R engine, however, we now have some timing issues.

We had our mechanic neighbor help us setup the timing to the 0 mark on the balancer, however, the engine runs rough, and stalls when we let it idle.

We tried adjusting the timing chain, and the rotor, but don't know what to do now. We advanced the rotor by one tooth so the timing wound up at the 5 mark, and it runs fine, but the manual suggests the 0 mark for the 22R engine. Any suggestions?

check for vac leaks easy to miss a hose or two. which gaskets did you change? this is a 22R carbed or efi? If carbed did you set the timing with the vac hoses to the distributor disconnected and plugged up?

Are you sure you have the chain set correctly? This will cause you issues as well as a vac leak. When you set the timing be sure to have the diag jumper in as well.

We cranked it over a couple times to check the marks, and all lined up properly.

We checked as much as we could. The gaskets we replaced were the head, timing cover, exhaust, intake, and all the valve cover gaskets. It's a 22R, so carb engine, and we set the timing without the hoses connected, but not plugged up.
