and thank you for taking the time to read this. I searched about 20 pages deep and didn't see anything so my apologizes if this is a repeat question. So I have a 1986 4 Runner that i let my mother borrow. The next day I get in the truck the speedo dosnt work and the heater blower wont turn on. I checked the fusses by the driver side kick panel and they look good but there was some corrosion on the terminals. Also the person I bought it from has two wires spliced into two of the fusses. Mind you the truck has been working fine for 2 years. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The speedo and blower issues are unrelated.

 

I agree. It is highly unlikely that the speedometer and blower problems can be traced to a single source. I bet it was coincidental that the two problems happened when your mother was driving the 4Runner.

The speedometer and odometer (and Trip Meter, if you have one) are driven by a mechanical speedometer cable that goes from the transfer case to the back of the speedometer. Does the odometer work? I am willing to bet it does not. The speedometer problem can be the speedometer gauge itself, the speedometer gear in the transfer case, or the cable itself. Did the speedometer bounce while driving prior to the problem?

Do any of the blower fan speeds work or is it completely dead? The fuse for the blower motor is not with the rest of the fuses and is behind the glove box on the left side. Toyota calls this fuse the HEATER 20A fuse.

Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it? Check fuses using a multimeter or test light. Sometimes a fuse may appear good, but cannot pass current electrically.

Corrosion is never a good sign when it comes to electrical components. Is water leaking into the cab?

Do you know what modifications the previous owner made to the electrical system? I personally would get rid of the previous owner's wiring and return the wiring back to stock, but you can easily open an electrical can of worms.

 

Maybe your mom pegged out the speedometer? You never know with ladies - LOL!
