1985 W56 tranny 1 gear growl
Hey guys so im new here , but iv got a 1985 toyota pickup with the w56 tranny in it, and about a year and a half ago I pulled the tranny out to have the 5 gear whine fixed in it. Didn't have the time to do it myself, so I had a shop do it. I get it back and 1st gear sounds like gears aren't meshing or rubbing or something, but everything else works fine. I just left it, but then the output seal went out and the fluid got too low and finished the rest of the tranny off, so the I pulled it myself to rebuild it and figure out this 1st gear problem. So before putting the case halves together I spent some time looking at it and putting in first gear and putting pressure on the input shaft, but could never find anything. Anybody have ideas? Does the front counter shaft bearing need to be locked on the shaft? When I put that new bearing on it just slid right on, but it the counter shaft can't move through the mid plate bearing so that shouldn't be a problem so just curious if anyone has had experience with any of that. Thanks

I've built a few Toyota 5 speeds but not enough to say off the top of my head to answer your question. I just followed the Toyota specs from a manual. I did put Marlin Crawler upgraded shifter seats and sockets in all of them. I also put in upgraded shift forks and maybe bearing plates that Marlin recommended. I don't trust Chinese bearings so I always install Japanese brands like Nachi, Koyo or NSK.
Good luck with it. I'm sure you will do a better job than that shop did.
