1984 body swap thread...

Hmm... well I wish I could suggest something concrete... my truck has the same problem. I think its a solid axle Toyota thing (hence the switch to IFS, less manly but WAY more comfortable).
I've read previous posts on crappy ride quality like the both of our trucks and it seems the agreed solution has been to ditch whatever spring setup you have and order from "Old Man Emu". Are your leaf springs old? Mine are WAY old Ranchos and if I had to guess, I'd say there isn't very much "spring" left to the leaf springs.

I'm working on taking one of the leaves out of the pack in the rear right now. the stud that holds them together is a pita. I worked on it for about two hours before the neighbor came out and told me he was trying to sleep. But yeah I'm planning on getting some kind of a new suspension setup asap but i'm broke right now.

Pretty sure DMV goes by frame VIN. Easiest way would be to swap the vins from the 84 to the 86 cab and run it. Or if you want to be all legal and such, swap cabs and take it to state patrol and have them do their thing.

Being Legal makes it legal, do it right or not at all.

Call up the Highway Patrol and speak to the officer in charge of VIN Re-Assignment. Tell him you're replacing a rusted out truck cab with a better one and that you want to keep your original registration, because the "new cab" VIN number is junked out (if it is not junked out, be sure to junk it out).
The officer wanted BOTH sets of plates (both vehicles) so I drilled the rivets out and gave them to him. He made me a BRAND NEW universal plate (but still a Toyota VIN punched into it) because you're just replacing a MAJOR PART on the vehicle and thus, it is still controllable by Emissions Regulations and still required to hold to that.
Turbo4Runner: The frame VIN is not recognized by the DMV because it is a few characters shorter than the body VIN and the nice lady behind the desk will tell you that the computer drew a blank.
I agree with OCD on double-checking with local highway patrol. Delicate procedures such as this could vary from county to county, and more than likely, state to state.
