I can safely say I hate doing exhaust , after attacking it myself.

 

Haven't started the exhaust yet. I've got all the stuff and picked up my neighbors hydraulic pipe/tube bender.

I've had to finish up my weber carb conversion first. I just finished that. I need to get it tuned, but I plan on starting the exhaust soon. Hopefully within the next few days for so. I will be just removing the cats. Screw those things. The rig is 25 yrs old and no longer needs to pass emissions.

 

poyntr, I just put one end of the cat down on hard concrete and beat it out with a 3lb hammer and piece of 1" square tube. takes about 5 min

 

I started my exhaust. It's going pretty well. I went from the down pipe back and removed the cat. It's been tough because the pipe bender I'm using is not good at all and I'm not sure how I'm going to make the bends for the last pipe because the way my bender is you can only do them so often when changing direction in the bend in pipe (hard to explain) so i've got to see if I can salvage the muffler back pipe

 

i did my own exaust too. mine cost about $80. my exaust is straight pipe 2 1/4 with a $25 muffler in the middle. sounds great and plenty of power. one thing i can suggest to anyone wanting to do theirs too is weld it all up. i started by having mine clamped together. i think i had 2 clamps on each end of the muffler and 2 others holding sections of pipe. i ditched those and fully welded my exaust. talk about a difference.

I think I know what you are talking about. If you are using one of the benders from Harbor Frieght, "the one that is basically a jack with a 1/4 round die on top and two rollers on the top of the jig." I think you are going to have problems going up over the axle, and around the spare tire.

You could take a look at bending the pipe up over the rear axle, and out between the frame and leaf spring just behind the tire. I thought about it, seemed like it would be easier. But I have way to much sage in that leaf spring. Just looked at a complete Old Man Emu medium suspension system from rocky-road. $844.00. Just got to talk the wife into it.

Just dont run it straight out the back. I did that on a 85 K5 Blazer. After that I could not ride with the rear window down, it would suck the exhaust straight in the cab.

I thought about running it right out the back. Yes, that is the exact type of bender I'm using. It sucks for this stuff. For the rear I'm cutting the exhaust pipe into section and am going to make angles and weld them back together so that I can get up high enough over the axle b/c I don't want to hit my new exhaust (with the axle) if I drive over something.

 

Yep that should do it. Should also work for going around the spare. Harbor Frieght and autozone sell tail pipe expanders pretty cheap. That way you could expand out the last 3" of each section. Then insert the next section and weld it up tight.

 

That's a pretty cool tool. Might have to look into it. I've had to take a break during the week because of work. I want to get it done by the end of this weekend. Not having the right tools (or good ones) has drawn this out a lot longer than necessary. I've got a couple indentions in my pipe from the down pipe to the muffler because of the pipe bender. I don't have much experience with exhaust, but is this going to give me a wierd sounding exhaust?

The indentions may be approx 1/2" (damn pipe bender). There are two of them before the muffler

I went back to the shop were I did mine and took a good look at the bender. It's a big hydraulic bender. But I think I can put together a smaller version with a large hand pump hydraulic cylinder. When I get some time in the next few weeks I will put my idea to some autocad and see what happens. But if my idea works. I think it could market for under $300.00.

 

Yeah, it sounds pretty good. It's a little louder than stock, but that's about it. Perfect for me cause I don't want to hear a loud exhaust in my cab as I drive everywhere I go. That get annoying really fast. I got a pro flow 18" or 19" muffler with 2.25" exhaust.

As far as power, it's tough to tell (there's got to be, there's not cat and it's free flowin now). I'm sure there is, but I haven't had much time to drive it around or test it out. I'm still workin on the weber 32/36 that I installed a few weeks back (possible vacuum leak and it needs tuned).

As of now, I don't think my truck and any emissions items on it anymore. ha ha ha

 

Not bad at all guys, makes me want to go out and buy a welder.

You'll see if there is a sensor in it. Should be pretty obvious from the outside.
