I dont dare go above 70 mph in my rigs... over 500k between the 2 of them, and they are over 15 yrs old.... I did once have the 93 up to 100, but that was almost 10 yrs ago....

well, I got my speedo nearly maxed with 4.88s and 31s, but I was just barely in the fast lane on the freeway, so I was probably only doing about 75 or 80. I usually just go 65 or 70, I haven't tried to go any faster on 33s. 81, 162k original miles 22r, 4.88s 33x10.5s

On the flat freeway with unlocked hubs, I've maintained 85MPH. ANY incline at all and that top speed drops to about 65MPH. Incline over 4% and I'll be maxing out in 3rd at 45MPH.

I think I had my 81 up to 85 once... Hopefully I can get enough power out of whatever engine I choose to put in it that I can run a steady 75-80 on interstate.

From the 1983 4WD Pickup Owner's Manual:

"Maintain engine speed between 2000 and 4000 rpm."
Recommended shifting speeds.
1 to 2 or 2 to 1 15mph/24kmh
2 to 3 or 3 to 2 25mph/40kmh
3 to 4 or 4 to 3 40mph/64kmh
4 to 5 or 5 to 4* 45mph/72kmh
* 5-speed transmission only

Maximum allowable speeds.
1 28mph/45kmh
2 47mph/75kmh
3 71mph/115kmh

If you guys were wondering about anything else straight from Toyota's manual, feel free to ask. I'll scan specific pages if you're curious.

I guess for that matter, I have the "1983 Toyota Owner's Guide" and a 1986 printing of a "Chilton's Toyota Trucks 1970-86 Repair and Tune Up Guide" if there's anything of note in those books you're curious about.

I have one of those too. It's pretty cool how they have a quote in there that says they think toyota owners should know as much about their vehicles as the people that built them. It's pretty much the complete opposite of what manufacturers want today. (they don't want you to know anything, more money if you have to take it to a stealership to get it fixed)

88, fresh 22RE with 270 cam, bigger valves, port work, header, 2 1/4" exhaust, K&N, 31's, 4.56's

Level grade on I-10, 100mph on speedo, tach was I think over 4000rpm. Slowly creeping faster.

This was in Az in cool dry winter weather. No way will it do it when it hits 100+ degrees.

Maybe with some modifications it would be different...but even though I have had my truck up just over 80mph, it sure doesn't seem safe. It's fine on a nice straight flat smooth road, but hitting frost heaves or bumps is scary going any fast than 60-65mph. That's actually become my highway speed on trips. Right around 60 or so. Slow, but at least it feels safe.

88 is the year of your pickup then and not the top speed?

Hopefully I can build my 22R up so it will at least run a steady 75mph w/o revving too high. I don't think I could handle driving under 70 on interstate.

Yeah...the reason this topic is in the pre-84 section is that these trucks aren't fast! Not too impressive if someone with a Tacoma comes in and says they can easily do 100mph...

Coming down 80 from Tahoe I hit 80? I have 4.10s with 31s, the speedo said 80 but maybe faster? It was pretty freaking scary.

Not that we're e-racing, but for the sake of conversation..

My '83 w/ a 97 3RZ (Mods in signature) will easily cruise at speeds in excess of 85mph without much throttle input in mildly hilly Southern New Mexico at an elevation of around 5000ft ASL. I REALLY don't want to find out the top speed as even 85mph isn't what I'd consider safe for the handling characteristics of the truck. I have no problems cruising at 70-75 sustained on the interstate however, and do it every day.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The 3RZ has been the best modification at "modernizing" my old pickup for daily use.

120+ MPH (Speedometer runs / caibrated at 1/2 speed) and still had reserve.

My 1980 with the stock gearing (4.30?), 33's on I15 headed from Baker, Ca. toward Barstow was showing 75.
Faster than a speeding ticket.
