Window off track in '79. Any ideas?
I purchased at 1979 2wd 5spd 20r Toyota truck in September. I love this rig!
Here's my problem: The driver's side window has come off of the track inside of the door.
My boyfriend and I fixed it a couple weeks ago, only to have it come out of the track again a couple days later.
The gasket that holds it in the track is almost completely disintegrated (Of course! What rubber lasts 33 years in the extreme heat and cold that Spokane has to offer?), and I cannot find a replacement for the life of me. I have been told to go to the dealer (yeah right! Like the Toyota Dealership has 33 year old truck parts!) or to a wrecking yard (okay, so replace 33 year old rubber gasket with another 33 year old rubber gasket? I think not!) to get the part I need.
I tried calling Steele's rubber, and they can't help me either.
I was thinking about getting some polyethylene (surgical) tubing, cutting it down the length of the tubing and using that as a gasket...
OR
Filling the track inside the door with some sort of outdoor silicon caulking (or rubber cement? or gorilla glue), resetting the window in the track, and not touching it for about 24 hours or so while the silicon cures.
Or maybe you guys have other ideas and can point me in the right direction?
Thanks much!
Laura

Did you try the dealer? That's where I get any parts that I don't want to buy used...
Otherwise, no, I don't have any ideas right now, without actually having a picture in my mind of what you need. Been too long since I had my door apart...

That seal dosen't keep the window in it's track. You will need a new window regulator. Check out rockauto.com for a replacement. I would try your dealer for the replacement seal though. You would be amazed what they still have around.
I have tried to fix them but the gears just wear out over time.

are u talking about the U-shaped window channels that run vertical in the door? they make universal stuff that may work for you.
check this site: autopartswarehouse.com
it has pictures with dimensions to help you match it.
looks like they have regulators there too for about $30 if that's what you need instead. (rockauto is another good cheap parts source like Pimp Yoda said!!)

tj884Rdlx - Yes! U shaped window channel that runs vertical in the door! That is exactly it!
snobdds - I'm not sure if it is the regulator, per se. It seems to be working just fine.
I haven't tried the dealer yet, as I had to personally deal with them before I got my truck when I bought a Scion brand new. They are not the most honest people in the world, and have personally tried to rip me off before.
I may take it to a glass place to find out if it really is the regulator or not, but I think getting some type of universal gasket for the u-channel would probably fix it for good.
Thanks everyone for your replies! I'll post again when it's fixed to let everyone know how it goes.

P.S. I would post a picture of the problem, but I have no digital camera and no way of uploading the pics.
