Whats the CHEAPEST way to put a high output alternator in a 1982 22R?
Does anyone know the cheapest way to buy and install a high output alternator for my 1982 Toyota 22R?
I looked around online for high output alternators for my 1982 22R and found two kits for a 120 amp alternator http://tinyurl.com/cggjrt8 for $275 and a 140 amp alternator http://tinyurl.com/b3nayon for $350. I called and they said both will work perfectly on my vehicle and will crank out that amperage even while idling. They both use Delco alternators. I called back and found out they carry a kit without the alternator and wire for only $40 http://tinyurl.com/cb4thsq with a list of 5 alternators that will fit on it
I was thinking I would probably buy their $40 kit and buy the alternator somewhere else to save money if that is possible. I'm just checking to see if anyone has ideas for how to do this cheaper...and if there is any downside to installing a high output alternator?
Thanks!
Steve

You can buy the mounting hardware here http://www.lceperformance.com/Altern...-p/1080055.htm
I bought my CS130 3 wire alternator and adapter plug from O'Reilly's for $89.00. There are plenty of threads about the 1 wire or 3 wire upgrades

There are various outputs based on the 130mm frame. I bought a 105 amp since I wasn't planning to put alot of high ampere items on my build. From what I understand, these alternator will have full output at engine idle, but that depends on the pulley diameter, I assume. I went with the O'Reillys part number #01-0381 re-manufactured unit, since it was low cost and 1 year limited warranty. YMMV

Is your high output alternator running now? What do you think about it?
I haven't had a chance to check it out, since I'm in the middle of my rebuild and the engine is in the stand. I desmogged my engine and moved the alternator to the right side and built my mount.
