What year did Toyota put the 2 latches on the top sides of the tailgate?The reason I am asking is that my dad has an 80' that is mint and is missing the tailgate and I am wanting to try and find him one without him knowing.I thaught it was 79'-83' but now I am begging to think I am wrong.Doe's anyone have one that they would part with?

Nice indian was hoping you got here to clear up the year, Wasn't these beds either from Canadian/Japan Imported beds vs US Ford made models ???

 

Up to 88 Toyota had the option of the dual latching gate. Btw, that was just in America.

In other countries, it was available for many years after that.

 

The "one touch" tailgate was first offered in '82...But as pictured above the two latch tailgates were used in 84-88s as well. An 1980 would surely have a two latch unit.. NP lilhank Didn't notice you were looking for the whole tailgate and not just the latches.

I wish you came here a year ago I had one of these tail gates on my regular bed before i tore it off for the flatbed. Only needed the latches. Unfortunately I didn't have room for it so it went to the scrap yard.

 

I got a tailgate ill sell you. Some surface rust, some dings, no holes. Very restorable. Tan color. I was going to use it on my truck, but then I came across one that was taken off the truck the day it was purchased to put one of those cheezy 80's nets on. pm me your email address and I can send you some photos of it. Canadian model Toyotas had the 2 latch system to /81 ... /82 + had the one touch

FYI there are 81s with both the dual latch and the "one touch" latch set up. You can't put a dual latch tail gate on a bed that is set up for single latch though, without some fab work that is. On the dual latch beds, there are the small indentations and hooks for the latches to grab onto just under the bed rail above the tail lights. On the one touch beds, the indentations aren'ts there at all.
