What is this?

Hello all! I thought I would post here to see if any of you could assist. I recently acquired a Porsche 914 with an interesting carb set up. I noticed the Toyota printed on it and the complicated vacuum setup was leading me to think it may be a 22r carb. However, the intake of the carb just looks different. Anyways, I will of course change this out to dual Webers eventually but for now Id like to see if anyone could tell me what it is exactly and possibly point me in direction for an air filter assembly.

Thanks!

Presumably, If the carb has Toyota "printed" on it, it is probably a Toyota carb. Go to a Porsche forum and find the part number for the carb. Also, find some of the many, many photos of stock Toyota carbs here and compare them to your carb.

An interesting observation, if true, but even if it is exactly the same carburetor, setup will likely be different in the Porsche. If you find a part number on the carburetor, you'll be getting somewhere...google that number, with the word Toyota, and then with the word Porsche. You may end up finding some are the same sites, about Porsche carburetor sales or tuning.

I can't get your thumb nails to enlarge on my pad, but that looks similar to a 20r carb from what I can see

Definitely looks like a 20R carb. Why was it in a porsche?

I do not remember what year Porche 914 had Mitsubishi four cylinder motors in but if your Porche has a four cylinder motor installed that would account for the Toyota carb. The four cylinder Mitsubihi motor is a counter balanced unit and was a very large displacement motor; you could tune it to put out a lot of HP.

I always thought that unless it was a 914-6 that the 914 had a souped up VW Type IV engine, all 4 cylinders, air cooled 1.8L and above..Been awhile since I sold my last VW..2002.

edit: with out seeing the rest of the manifold I am going out on a limb and thinking that it might have been a homebuilt/self fabbed intake. I ran into all kinds of stuff in the 25-30+ Air cooled V.W's I had over the years..

never heard of a mitsubishi motor in a 914. To my knowledge all 914s had a 2.0 vw "pancake" engine in them. Most (if not all) were fuel injected. There were many aftermarket carb adapter kits in the 80s for the folks that didnt like or couldnt fix the fuel injection. My guess it thats what you have... an aftermarket manifold to put a toyota carb on the 2.0. I have put a bunch of these motors in beetles and buses so I have a little bit of background on this. Just my 2 cents.

All I know is that I have seen about a dozen Porche 914's at car shows and they all had Mitsubishi motors installed with Porche labeled valve covers. The motors could have been produced by Porche / VW under license. The one Lotus highend sports car (I do not remember the model name) had a Mitsubishi turbocharged four cylinder(same as the Dodge Conquest TSI) installed and it was fast. SORRY, I GOT MY PORSCHE MODELS MIXED UP-PORSCHE 924s are the cars I saw with the Mitsubishi motors installed in. Sorry- Senior Moment!!!

Keep it on topic. Any nonsensical "search newb" or other BS posts are getting the axe.
