Alright, I got the AC going on my '80. Took the stock compressor off and put a Sanden in place of it because the clutch was bad. Bolted up in the stock location, stock lines hook up with no modification, and blows about 40 degree air out the vents.

The problem is the amount of airflow coming out the vents. You can't hardly feel any coming out the side vents, and the center one blows on high what a car normally would on low. Going from low to high there isn't much airflow difference, just a lot more noise.

Anyone ever had this problem or know a solution? Thanks!

Has a lot of debris gotten thru your windshield cowl and clogging up the ventilation system? Was it working great before the compressor swap?

 

Was the same before the swap. I'll have to see if it's clogged.

 

I'm having the same problem right now. I have really cold air [35-40 degrees] with very little volume coming through the vents. So I just checked the blower motor, except for being really dirty, it's working fine. The next step will be to check the evaporator. It's my understanding that all air blown through the vents in the cab has to pass through the evaporator first. So I think that's where the problem might be.

I added factory A/C to my truck a couple of years ago. I'm getting 34 degrees on a stock system with excellent air flow. Remove the evaporator under the dash. There's over 30 years of debris slowing the flow of air thru your system. Also check the ducts and make sure it's clear of debris. If this doesn't fix the problem check the blower resistor an then the motor itself. Make sure the fan is pumpin. Review the FSM, it's a great resource. These are really efficient systems and with properly maintenance can cool that cab really efficiently. Good luck..

 

I've got to change the evaporator anyways so that won't be a problem. Held a vacuum overnight but leaked all of the crap out in two days.

What freon are you using to get it to cool like that? I'm not running 134 or 12.

 

I'm using 134, 12 is getting pricey...If you have leaks, that's a whole other story, well wishes..

 

I know it's another story, but it's easily fixed . 134 around here is getting almost to 12 prices. Nearly $15 a can. I've started using keyboard duster (the compressed stuff in the cans you buy at walmart, about $5 a can) it contains r152a, which has been used in supermarket refridgerators in the past. Takes a lot less of it, it runs at lower head pressures, and uses ester oil (conversion oil) it cools just as good or better than 12. If anyone ever uses this, buy a r12 side can tap, and be sure to get the 10oz can because of the diameter. Took one can to fill my toyota.
