Vacuum Advance/ Timing Question
Recently just rebuilt my 22r for my 82 4x4, seemed to run great but when I broke out the timing light I stated having issues. With both vacuum advance hose's unplugged and blocked off the timing light is showing right at 8 dbtc, but as soon as I plug them back in it jumps to 22 dbtc. As far as I know and what my fsm says, with the vacuum advance hose plugged in I should be at 15 btdc. Any thoughts to as why it would do this? I know that all of my vacuum hoses are correct, just spent some time tracing them all. Its there a switch or sensor that could be bad?

Sounds like you need to retard the timing by about 10 degrees. Doesn't it make sense that the vacuum advance would advance the timing when you connect it? I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I think 5-7 degrees btdc is normal w/o advance line connected (but vacuum line plugged).
FYI- my '83 22R likes to run more advanced than FSM specs by a few degrees. As I recall, I left it at about 8 degrees BDC with vacuum line disconnected (and plugged). Am I right...????

Are you checking it when the engine is warmed up fully? Is your idle set too high, maybe? It's been a while since I had a stock dizzy, but I thought you set idle/unpluged vac advance to 5°. With the vac lines hooked up and engine warm, idle at 750-800 rpm, you should be at around 12°. But that's where mine is happy. Dial it back, drive and see how it works, pull a good hill and see if it knocks and pings, find where it's happy. Keep and eye on your plugs. Too advanced will run hot, give you problems.

The older first gen 4x4's are 8 degrees and advanced th 15. Its the newer ones at 5 and 12 (85 and up i think) but yes the engines warn and idle is spot on. Im using a nice snap on timing light that gives me the rpm's dead on. Could the vacuum advance on the remaned uint be bad or calibrated wrong?
