Transmission identification
So I bought an 83 tacoma longbed with a 22r engine...........It runs great but failed the emmisions check.
The guy that sold it to me tells me the transmission was changed out with a four speed some time ago.
So I have an SR5 with a manual four speed.
I wanted to research the transmission a bit but could not find any Identification on it.............where is the transmission Identification stamped on the transmission?
Thanks

that kind of sucks that he did that
4 speeds could be l43 or l45
...anyway these links might help you out

this page from marlin has pic's of each one:

Thanks for the info...........
I don't mind that it is a four speed.......the truck is for bombing around town.........
What differance would it make between a four speed or a five speed?
Are the four speed trannies durable?
Thanks

Did I miss some thing here?! What does the tranny have to do with emissions?? Just thought I'd add to scuba's q's... Hey scuba, pass me a longneck while I ponder with you on this,(preferably a Michelob)! I'm always willing to learn new stuff on yota's...

/me passes an ice cold michelob to Stepside. Umm, Idk if he was just stating the fact that the truck wouldnt pass emissions, and maybe that he'd rather have a 5speed..? Never have I heard of a transmission being apart of emissions stuff..I dont really understand what it could do to help...? Lol, I know the answer to my questions...No, no and shut up. Im sure he's just confused with the fact that the older trucks werent tacomas, and just simply "Trucks", well 79 and up, Under they were hiluxes. anyway...

The four speeds are durable... the five speeds acutally had a problem with the imput shaft bearing... check out the search feature, there is a lot of posts of good posts on the topic.

If it is an L43 then the belly of the transmission will go up just before it mounts to the transfercase like this.

if it is the L45 it will be flat like this.

Indeed, no you didn't buy an 83 Tacoma.
Good choice in truck though and welcome to the pre-84 area! Tacomas came out in..what? '95? Before that they were hilux pickups. Just like Nissans were just Nissan pickups until the Frontier sometime in the '90s. Keep the screen name, though, it will make people curious about your truck.

Thanks for all the replies.....I had a good laugh last night at work reading them.
I can read at work, but not post.
Things I've learned:
Stick to topic......Yes the transmission has nothing to do with the emissions. (BTW it passed after having a machanic give it a once over)
Yes I don't have an 83 Tacoma.........Title says HTP (Half Ton Picup?)......Original Owners manual says Modle:7395-A
I maight have gotten the Idea it was a Tacoma from an insurance card or the guy that sold it to me......anyhows good laugh out of it.
4 Speeds are fine.
Thanks again.

Hilux Toyota Pickup? Not sure. Usually half tons are 2wd aren't they? Although titles are weird, they sometimes put stuff on there that doesn't make any sense.

4wd Toyotas are rated as half ton pick ups. 2wds were either 1/2 or 3/4 ton. Most 3/4 ton 2wds (but not all) were dualies. Jeeps are 1/4 ton
I could be wrong, I forget a lot of stuff
