trans question? 1981?
there is a guy in my town that bought some property and it has a 1980 or 1981 4x4 pickup on the land the front axle and transfer case are gone but everything else minus a couple odds and ends is there and in fairly good shape he says I can take what I want before he scraps it my question is will the transmission work in my 82 it has no shifter in it so I am not sure how to tell if it is a 4 or 5 speed....next question is will the lights, light buckets, and grill swap on the front of my truck...he is pretty sure the truck is a 1981, thanks for any help in advance.....

Get EVERYTHING you can. Someone will want it. I hate being here where things are slightly more rusty, and down in California guys are scraping perfectly good first gen beds and other body parts.... I would love to come across a rust free bed...or even tailgate!
If they tranny is a "side shift", it's likely a 4 speed. It would work, but you're not going to be happy going from a 5 speed to a 4. If the shifter is on top of the tranny, just in front of the t-case shifter, it's a 5speed. If the shifter is off to the side a bit (passenger side?), it's a 4 speed.
Otherwise, get as much of the interior as you possibly can. Seriously. If it's in halfway decent shape. If you don't need it, someone else does, and they'll pay.

it actually rained today so I didn't get a chance to go check it out or pull any parts but I did kinda look through the hole where the shifter went and it looks as if the shifter was forward and off to the right a little bit...and are the gear ratios different in the first four gears of both transmissions because with 38" tsl's I have never seen 5th gear in my truck not even on a downhill....

Do a search, if someone's not nice enough to post it for you. I'm not sure of the link, but there are a few places that tell you the gear ratios for all the Toyota transmissions. Marlin's site probably has it.
38's are going to destroy a 4 speed pretty fast, from what I hear. You'd be best off getting your 5 speed rebuilt, or finding a used W series tranny and doing the modifications to make it fit your truck, especially if you're running giant tires.

thanks 83 my trans is good I just wasn't sure if the four speed would be better than the five speed since I don't use fifth...u know just as a backup well I am pump about the front grill and lights I believe someone said u did that swap was it a direct bolt on?

No...but pretty damn close. The plugs for the wires for your front parking lights will need to be spliced, so grab those connectors from the truck, too. There were a couple headlight mounting brackets I had to drill. But it's basically a direct swap. If you do any mechanic-ing or home improvement or any of that stuff, you'll be able to figure out what to do no problem. This stuff is simple compared to a lot of the other stuff we end up doing to our trucks...
