whats wrong with your current ride looks to me like it would be a downgrade if anything, and for that $ you should be able to do better

I'd keep your truck then, unless something is really wrong with it

'82 are the worst of the 1st Gens...JK. Price is not too bad, you could probably get him down to $1800'ish. From the limited view in the pictures it doesn't look too bad. Depends on how many miles, compression check etc.
Other than high miles on your 22RE anything wrong with your truck or just thinking of something different? The 22R is a great motor, but a good running 22RE in my opinion will have a little more grunt power..

Is there any truth to that, and if so why?
I always have an eye out for a nice 1st gen, anything I should shy away from?

hmmm, no. Please notice the...JK short for just kidding...personally I think 81-83 are nice since they came with the 22R and a 5 speed. 79-80 usually had the 20R and a 4 Speed..

I love mine - 82 short bed 4x4 5 speed. If that truck were selling for that price down here it wouldn't last a week.

The only real problems I have had with my 82 were the problems in the tranny. If it had a newer 5 speed in it there would be no problems at all with them. Other than a bit under powered but you drive a 22RE so you are used to low power. My friend has a 4runner with 22RE and I can beat his with my 82. But mine has a few add ons. But they are a good truck. Don't ride the greatest but they don't let you down. At least mine has yet to in 3.5 years. Has not stopped once. You may have to rebuild the tranny but a rebuild kit for that is $260 so its not a big deal at all. Good trucks.

My trucks got 300,000 miles. I've drove it for around 15k without a single problem except the starter contacts. Given its got a few issues, but she drives everyday and always makes it home.

Ahh yes I forgot about the starter contacts. I guess I have had 2 problems with it. 80000kms and no problems other than the tranny and starter contacts. Of course frame rust but that does not contribute to the mechanical workings so it doesn't count. They are a reliable truck that will get you where you need to go and take all the beating you can give it while there and then bring you home again no matter how much they hate you.

I essentially traded my 1994 4wd 4runner automatic for a 1985 4wd pickup that I've built up myself. Check out my thread if you want to learn what not to do

Seriously, though, I'm glad I did it. I love the simplicity of the engine and the reliability of the SFA (no more cv boots to repair - I've done 3 in the last year).

Of course, you already have the 22re as I had the v6 and was tried of pulling the plenum off to do anything.

I say go for it, just make sure you have a 2nd ride when problems come up on the project truck. My wife hates it when I say "Honey, do you by chance need the van for the next 3 or 4 days?" as I'm standing over a whole mess of parts next to my truck.

that belongs in the "stupidest thing somebody's ever told you about cars" thread in off-topic.
Honestly, i can see maybe still buying it if it was only on one cylinder, and wasn't that low

(eg mine goes 165-163-123-164)
