Stuck In 4 Low

OK, I have an 81' Toy and it's been binding in the diff or tcase. I get the clicking like driving a tank. This happens on or off road. A while back, I had in 4L and it was a biatch to get it back into 2HI. I just put a new clutch in and dropped everything in Neutral, but the 4WD gear shift is too close to 4L when it's in Neutral and slipped into 4L when we put it back in. Now it won't release and I can't drive around with my Tcase spinning all my gears around, that will just suck even more power and I do have oversize tires.

Do I need to crack the Tcase off of the tranny? is there a pin inside to fool with or do I just bang on the side with a hammer?

I can swap another tranny out for 150 bux with Tcase, but 81 I believe is the only year that has 3.90 ratio everything else that I can use(79-83) is 4.10(pre and post 81)

Any Ideas?

not sure about getting the TC out of 4 low.
the 3.90 gears you are referring to are in the differentials so that is indepedent of your transmission gears.

You say it is binding.
Your gears the same front and back?
Tires the same no miss matches?

Yeah, tires are new MT 38's. 5" lift with extended drive lines, I think the Tcase is malfunctioning. It's 30 degrees here, so a little hard to want to go work on it. But, it needs to be repaired. I should drain and refill all the fluids in the front diff and Tcase, but like draining molasses.

Ah I just did my transmission yesterday and it hasn't gotten up to 30 degrees here in over a week. Not ideal, but...you've just got to drive it around a few miles to warm the fluid up. It's the fluid you're filling it back up with that will be like molasses.

38" tires and 3.90's? You don't use 4th or 5th gear, do you?

wow and i thought having 33 and stock tires was gutless, never mind 38 and stock gears.

i put my tc shifter in backwards and was stuck in 4lo, switched it around and went right back into hi..if you had to pull the linkage out then its possible you put in backwards cause it looks the exact same flush and fits in both ways but only shifts when its in the proper way..hope this helps.-will

I just put a brand new clutch in 2 weeks ago. The old one was in for at least 15 years, and just recently started to get grabby. I use 4th on the freeway and 5th downhill! 22r's are gutless regardless, they are only 4 cylinders?!?!

I took the shifters out to drop the tranny and i'll check direction, but it was a pain to get in 2HI last time, so, I'll look at the Tcase closer today.

sure they are gutless but you would be surprised what a set of 5.29's or 5.71's would do to bring life back to your engine...that is if it is a good running 22r.

So, with 38's, 3.90's are to boggy? 5.71's would be better geared for a lift and big tires? So that would translate into more torque for climbing in 4WD also? A cam would be nice as well.

ewww... 5.71 = Snappage

4.88 or 5.29 FTW.
33 - 35 = 4.88 (Depends on Tranny IMO)
4spd 4.88
5spd 5.29
35+ 5.29 is a must.

going from the stock 235/65 size to 31/10.5 I could not tell a difference in my 82, would 33s be a lot worse?

Very little, but noitcable from stock. If you cannot feel the difference of the 31's, then I doubt you will feel much difference in the 32's.
