How long would you say it took to do this project. And what's the difficulty on a 1-10 I'm really nervous about tearing into my front axle because I don't want to ruin it. You did and a great job on those. They look awesome.

I did this a couple weeks ago and it was pretty simple. I made sure to read through the write up and studied the photos. I only had to look at the service manual for torque numbers. Thanks for posting this.

 

i never done a knuckle rebuild yet, but i guess its time because my pass. side is LOOSE!! no good!! im wondering if this rebuild kit from allpro will contain everything that i need? heres the link:

Make sure to read through this tread a couple of times, so you are familiar with the sequence of things. It is not difficult if you pay attention and do things in the proper order.

Make sure to keep good track of how the shims are placed(assuming that whoever last did the knuckles adjusted the correct preload).

I got my kit from Wab Fab, and it seemed to be fine. I did not use the knuckle bearings in the kit, as the ones on on the truck were Toyo bearing in good condition. I have heard varying experiences with the quality of cheaper knuckle bearings if you are wheeling, but all that stuff is on here somewhere.

Also, keep a lot of rags around, as there is lots of grease that is really nasty.

More to the point, what makes you think you need a whole knuckle rebuild? What is loose? Wheel bearings? I did mine because the ends of the axles needed attention and the felt wipers were letting tons of grease out and tons of crap in.

As was said above "can you turn a wrench left and right?" It really is that easy if you pay attention.

um im rebuilding my 81 sfa right now and i got a kit from marlin and i think its the wrong kit. i believe the shims in the kit are wrong ill post some pics of them but there were two different kinds. should the old shims be ok to use? i dont wanna buy another 200 dollar kit if they wont exchange it. any suggestions? thanks

 

Yes by everything I have read the old shims are fine to use. Make sure you have the correct shims per side

My son dismantled my front axle, but didn't keep track of the shims. Is there a factory setup, or starting point, and how do you know if you got it right?
