put the trans in neutral, take the shifter knob off, lift up on all of the corners of the trans/tcase rubber boot and there are a bunch of phillips head screws, take them all off(8 in total I think?), unclip the shift boot(leather), there should be a rubber boot under that, take it off.. now you should be able to see the top of your trans, at the base of the shifter there's a stainless steel ring, push down on it and turn at the same time, its spring loaded it will pop up, now the shifter just comes right out. to get the old shifter seat out you need a flat blade screw driver, getting the new one in is even funner to get it around the pins, there's also a nylon bushing on the end of the shifter that needs replacing too, it sort of just pops off hard to explain, make sure you use lots of grease.
Oh and changing the trans fluid is really easy this way, undo the drain and filller plug, let it drain, put the drain plug back in, fill the trans through the shifter hole until fluid drips out of the filler plug.. way easier than sitting under there squeezing/pumping a few bottles of gear oil into it.
