shifter question

Hey guys, I just picked up a 82 pickup and the shifter just spins around. A quick search on here turned of several good threads on shifter removal and replacing the bushings. i guess mine has been messed up for a while because the 2 pins that is in the shifter housing are completely wore out. I was able to pull one out with some pliers but the other wont budge. Any ideas on fixing this? thanks

the pins are steel .. and the housing is alum.

I would remove the shifter housing .. and just replace them (fabrication time) . or buy a new top shifter housing .

Is there a trick to removing the plate? it has a round piece the slides into another piece in the trans. I pulled on it but it didnt seem like it just slid out. If i can get them out ill just tap them for some small bolts and be done with it. thanks

Try turning that round piece and then lifting it out.

you cant really turn it. it s the piece that is held down by 4 bolts and att. to the top cover pictured here. http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...ilt-top-covers
Ill see if I can lift it up some to turn it but it didnt seem like it had much give.

Yeah just replaced mine. Push down and twist off. I think it twist counter clock wise. Also the Toyota dealer I went to had the shifter seat (black rubber on bottom green rubber on top) and the Lil cap the goes on the end of the shifter. Solved all my problems. Yeah still a Lil loose but better than having the Trans rebuilt. A total cost of 16.00 I think. There are better shifter seats out there than the Yota dealer. Michael

You got me on that one. Look on my page, 20R Rebuild blues, there is a service manual that might help you out. Michael

Is the shift lever out yet? You need to take it out by pushing down & turning the retainer holding it in. Then when you take the 4 bolts out, you may be able to get to cover plate off. I tried getting my shifter out the way you're doing it, and it doesn't work. You have to get the retainer & spring out from around the shift lever base. Whether that will then allow you to take the top plate off, I'm not sure...but I know you can't get it off with the shifter in place.

Ok, just making sure people weren't talking about different things. I've never gone deeper that just taking the shift lever out, so after that, I can't help. Have an FSM? I just so happen to have one at work with me today. I'll see if I can find it at some point. Mine will be for an L52, but it may be the same proceedure.
