Hello all!
I recently bought a 1980 Toyota pickup 2wd 5 speed and I decided to pull the trans and fix some leaks.
When I removed the shifter I noticed the bushing that slides onto the ball joint was missing.
I ordered a bushing for the W50 trans and it was to big to slid into the trans hole. However the bushing did clip onto the shifter no problem.
In the picture you can see the large bushing doesn’t fit into the hole in the trans but the small bushing (from a L43 trans) does slide in no problem.
My question is, does anyone know what shifter would work for my trans???
I thought the L43 (bushing I bought) was only a 4 speed?
Number on the side of the trans read:
33141-20090
Below it says SK-81 Small bushing fits inside trans but not on shifter Numbers on trans
fits a few years ..
if i remember correctly , you have to "snap" it on over the ball

Yeah the larger bushing snaps onto the ball but then it doesn’t fit inside the trans.
and the ball doesn’t fit into the smaller bushing so that’s my struggle. Finding the right small ball shifter to snap onto the small bushing and slide into the trans. I’ll check out your links though!
Could the cup inside the shifter housing be the old missing bushing?
I thought that could have been the problem but I think I figured it out, the mounting plate where the shifter slips into has an odd shape and it seems that it’s from a Toyota car not a pickup (after seeing images online)
Mind showing some photos? I have an 82 2WD with what appears to be the same 5spd trans. Just replaced both bushings and now the shifter is SUPER tight. It won't pull back to center between 3rd and 4th when in neutral like every other manual I've ever owned. Doesn't seem normal. Some photos below, Sorry they are so damn large but I can't seem to find the resize tool.
For what it's worth, I greased the crap out of everything with GP grease.
New smaller bushing installed on the ball joint. Hadn't cleaned things up yet but you can see the shifter seat bushing has completely deteriorated into a ring of rubber.
Replacement seat. Sadly the two pieces, which seemed to be crudely glued together, separated when I was trying to jam it past the pins on either side of the opening. I presume it was okay to install them as "two pieces" since it's not like they are being stressed very hard.
What I assume is the remainder of the old seat... it's also beveled on the top, the new one was a two piece but not beveled on the bottom part. Which is odd. Almost seems like this was the top of whatever was in there, I have no idea what the OEM piece is supposed to look like.
