yotantn. My take on this subject. Is to restore to original. I have purchased many parts from Mike Swartz at Giffiths toyota. I am presently restoring another first gen truck. He is a great guy to deal with. U could use a hole saw and drill a hole in the new dash, to install your defrost vents. I would be alittle nervous. just nice to see another first gen getting restored. keep up the good work.

Spend the money. Personally I'm going to the hole in the back of mine. It's in the will.

I'm thinking I'll just put it in first and see how it goes. The defrost vents weren't that impressive. LOL. But I'll keep em just in case. They're sorta low on my priority list. Thanks for that encouragement! Be sure to check out my build thread. I can use all the insights I can get from all you experienced restorers.

Yea man, mine ain't going nowhere. Since I sorta sidelined the lil truck, I bet my wife has said 50 times. 'You ain't driving that..why don't you just sell it?!'
My reply has always been; 'watch it..I had it before I had you'. LOL.
It's already a seeming money pit. But, hey..you only live once. I'm having a lot of midlife fun planning, researching, doing little by little. Enjoying the journey.

Here's a quick schematic of how the line-converter/ Ipod 3.5mm Jack setup is supposed look. Remember left/right RCAs and pos/neg speaker wires need to be separated. Essentially you can use your stock radio when there isn't any "signal" coming from the 3.5mm jack. When using the 3.5mm jack turn off the radio so you won't have dual signals going thru the speakers. Make sure the 3.5mm jack isn't laying against anything metal or you'll get some serious road noise (whine). With that said ground every component thoroughly.

All this stuff is easily available at radio shack. I ran the jack thru the bottom of the center console, so I can stow it away when it's not needed.

I hope this helps, we need more original 1st Gens 4x4s, good luck.

Excellent! Thanks. Yea this will help.
Only thing I'd have to change is alter this for an Android device.

Hey thanks for the good info. I do have a question though; if you have to use it with
The radio off, then the amp will need to be on. Most amps have the blue (remote)
Wire that hook up to the radio to power it up when the radio is turned on. How
did you bypass this? Thanks

Go to the steering column and splice into an ignition lead. I think there is a yellow wire I used for the amp.
