R151F Swap?

I wondering if I can swap an R151F into my truck?

I know that Toyota uses 2 different bell housing bolt patterns for their transmissions. A small 9 bolt pattern and a large 9 bolt pattern. The R151F uses the large bolt pattern.

Now I'm going to assume that my 82 uses the small bolt pattern. So if I swap bell housings will I be able to bolt the R151F up to my 82?
Also will my 82 t-case bolt up to the R151F?

I like your idea. I remembered there being something different about the R151F bellhousing, I thought it might be integral. Appearently not, it has a weird rubber plug on the bottom. There's a pic of it in the link I'm gonna give ya. The point of which, the link, is to show you where it states that the '82 4x4 transmissions all have integral bellhousings. Which may spoil all your fun, I hope not. I want me a R151F too, I gots the 3vze.

I think the transfer case might fit, or maybe someone sells an adapter to make it.

Tony,

If i remember correctly, pre 85 22r's have one bolt pattern and the later blocks have another.

No, the 82 tcase will not bolt to the r151f, it has a different input spline, (21 on tcase vs. 23 on r151f)

I hope this helps,

Jon

Every R151 I have seen (Including the one out in the shop waiting to go into my truck) is a forward shift so chances are you will likely get the Trans+T case together from what ever source you buy it from. I don't know much about the 22r scene but the r151 will bolt straight in place of a w56 but as I stated above the R151 has a forward shift T case. If I had a 4cyl truck I would just pick up a w56 honestly. The only reason I needed an r151 is that its the only transmission Toyota made that can be bolted to a V6 motor (using the r150 bell housing) and to a gear drive T case with no adapters.

Top shift...

Forward shift....

you can get some more info here...

R151F is stronger the the W56 I believe. Not to mention it has a lower first gear. I want it do to this lower first gear, plus Marlin sells an engine lower first gear set. Hello crawl ratio!

Jon, you're right about the t-case splines, I forgot that. No worries though as various companies sell new 23 spline outputs (not to mention Longfield has one made from 4340 IIRC).

So all I will need is a bell housing, R151F and new outputs, not bad.

Now, where the heck can I find an R151F?

I bought one a local yunkyard with 20k on it for $350. You'll need the bellhousing from a truck that came with a 22ret (turbo). They had the RF style tranny.

My '97 4runner has the top shift by the way.

Your '97 4 runner doesn't have an r151f unless you swapped it...

The seat is the issue...forard shift for bench seat, top shift for buckets. I think there were more bench produced than bucket but still the same thing.

Nice find for $350...they are fairly difficult to locate.

The guy at the local yard was complaining that the toyota drivetrains don't move. I am pretty sure he had some more.
It's protruckandvan.com , maybe they'll ship if Toni really needs one.

Consider it a typo, didn't even realize it. Also didn't know Toni was a girls name.
