Angry Problems with my 81 22r 4x4

Alright, on my 81 22r 4x4 i keep running into this one problem. No matter what i do, whenever i cut off the engine, the engine will keep turning over for a few seconds and sputters until it finally stops. I just rebuilt the carb and everything is stock settings. engine was rebuilt a few months ago as well. also, my battery light keeps coming on even though i just rebuilt the alternator and the battery is a few months old as well. after rebuilding the carb, the engine cut right off after i switched off the key, but now that problem is back. and after i rebuilt the alternator, the battery light quit comming on and the truck ran great. now that problem is back too. any ideas to what u think the problems are? I really am getting sick of these stupid problems i almost just want to sell the dang thing!

thats called "dieseling". Try using a colder heat range of spark plugs. Make sure none of the ignition systems wires are like shorting or anything.

a couple different things pop into my head. try to run some seafoam through it, it sounds like it it dieseling, that is, it keeps running and firing on compression, like a diesel. the heat in the motor coupled with what im guessing is higher than normal compression might be setting it off. your timing might be off too, and get new plugs. it's cheap.

Also run some carb/engine cleaner through it, you might have built up carbon. Make sure the timing is in tune. Even though you said you rebuilt the carb, make sure its closing all the way.

edit: oh...slisdexia beat me to it

will do that for sure! but the funny thing is it wasn't doing any of this yesterday. just today. But yeah changing out the plugs might help. Thanks man, i am almost sick of it enough to sell it, then i looked back at her when i came home today, selling my yota would be a crime...

oh and i have already done seafoam a few months ago. maybe i should again.

I know the feeling

It wouldn't hurt to run more SeaFoam, but I kind of doubt it has built up enough carbon to to cause hot spots. I could be wrong of course. Maybe you're running too rich or too lean...?

What about the idle soleniod? Is that included in a rebuild kit? Could be bad.

Definetely check the wiring, too. Could be that the original battery light problem wasn't specifically the battery or alternator, but a bad connection or wire somewhere. These trucks are getting old, and so who knows what could be going bad anywhere along the line in the system.

my battery light came on because of a bad relay. The relay is by the passenger door, under the dash. Next time it comes on, hit the PS dash. If it goes off, the relay is bad, and the replacement ain't cheap

"anti-dieseling" solenoid on the carb .. have you checked it ?
it'll be sticking , creating the "run on" and signal to the batt light .

toyota identification .... SOLENOID, THROTTLE VALVE
part # 21062-35120

never dealt with it on a toyota, but on my dads 78 ford pickup it would diesel every time you shut it down hot.. the distributor hold down bolt had come loose and the distributor clocked out of time... checked the timing and adjusted it and it hasnt done it sence...that was roughly 6 years ago.

thanks a lot guys. I am going to run some seafoam through it for sure, and check the idle solenoid too. I am really thinking that is the problem for the "dieseling". but i will check everything else too. the fast idle adjustment doesn't cause any other problems does it? cuz my fast idle is a little too high, i am going to adjust that this morning. as far as the timing will check that too! and the battery light came on, but after checking the battery i know the alternator is doing its job and the battery has plenty of charge. so i will look into that as well. you guys are the best! thanks
