Pre '84 ARB Bumper

Will the ARB bumper for 1984 - 1985 fit my '83 pickup?

http://trdparts4u.toyotaofdallas.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=-9256

I've only seen one or two of the original '83 ARB bumpers, but they look nearly identical.

Thanks in advance!

Big investment to have to rework, if it did fit I bet ARB would list the same part number. but if you have the skills anything can be made to work

Agreed. But I didn't know if there were any significant frame or body differences between '83 and '84. Other than square fenders and redesigned hood, they look almost identical. And many other parts are interchangeable between the two.

Those are sweet bumpers and I wish I had one as well. The fit and finish on them makes the truck look like they could've almost been a factory upgrade.
Unfortunately, they never include pictures of the back side or explain how they mount up. I imagine if you called ARB they could send you a diagram or give you dimensions of the mounting points.
I also imagine that the ones made for 84-85 trucks will be a really close fit on 82-83. Certainly closer than 79-81 setups.
If you don't want to hassle ARB about it I would look into how the factory bumper system from 82-83 compares to the factory system from 84-85. Might be easier said than done.

Please let us know what you find out!

I agree, it looks like the '83 ARB bumper could have come from the Toyota factory!

Unfortunately the '84-'85 ARB bumper will just not work for my purposes. If you look closely at the driver's side fender below ('83 with an '83 ARB), the front fender of the truck goes behind and below the ARB bumper, and ties into the front valence directly below the headlight.

On the '84, the front fender stops where the ARB bumper begins. Even if you could get the '84 ARB bumper to mount to the truck frame, you would have to cut the front fenders to do it. That's not an option for me because I'm trying to do a resto-mod and keep it relatively stock looking.

The '83 ARB bumper is a really unique design in that it follows the lines of the truck, and still incorporates the lower front valence. It's a shame the quit making them.

I know this is an old thread. Hopefully i can bring it back to life. Im looking to do the same thing. Beside cutting the fender, will the bumper fit an 83?

Marco, I am also trying to do this and read on one of the Facebook forums recently that the 84/85 bumper bolts right onto an 83 and works just fine; that said, haven’t been able to get in touch with the person who posted it to confirm, and would like to find out more before moving forward. Have you made any progress?

I haven’t made any progress on. I sort of gave up on it. I was going to make one but I’d prefer to just buy one. I’ll ask around again and get back to you.

It does not, the frame its slightly narrower between the leaf spring mounts than the ARB bumper. Then the frame widens a bit and the ARB is narrower. I was able to notch the ARB bumper to have it follow the frame better and with a litte "gentle persuasion" and an engine hoist, I was able to get it in place. Re weld to close the notch and it was good to go!

As they said, It was a goood bit of midification to get it to wwork as the stock bumper mounts were in the way as well. The bolts holding the bumper to the frame lined up right where the bumper brackets bolted to the frame. I chose to drill out the threaded portion to limit the changes in case I ever went back

Jack, what truck was that ARB bumper originally build to fit? I don’t mind some modification myself

Holy smokes that truck is awesome! Please show us more!

It would be great to see some close-ups of how that bumper mounts to the frame.

I went on ARBUSA and sorted it by 79-85 toyota pickup. Says its a direct fit but, its not. I had to widen it by about 2 inches just past the leaf spring mounts and "persuade" it to be narrower at the mounts.

Pardon the less than ideal welds, I never took more photos after I fixed the feed speed and amperage
