Plate on back of 22R?

What is the plate on the back of the 22R engine below the valve cover?

Can this plate's gasket be replaced from under the hood?

'm gonna say probably NO. when I took my head off, I left that intact until I had my head laying on my work bench. As you know, it is such a tight squeeze, even if you can get it off, I don't know how you can honestly be sure you would have it all back together right.

I'll post you a pic of mine......

Can it leak oil? Found a lot of oil on top of my transmission when I pulled it out. the transmission is out right now and was wondering if I had to get at that plate from underneath above the clutch. If it can't leak oil then the oil is from my rear valve cover half-moon (I hope...).

no oil in there, i believe its either exhaust from the egr tubes or coolant running through it. Definitely not oil.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to slide my tranny back in tonight (easier said than done). Then sleep a whole lot better with my new real seal & clutch kit. I'll get to the valve cover & half moon later.

finding a gasket for it might be a PITA too. As well as cleaning off the old one.

easy like 6-8 bolts take the dust cover off and pull the seal. no harder than the rear main

OK, I'm sold. I'll wait to install trans until I get the seal. BTW... It's a straight forward 2WD W-Series Trans.

Yeah coolant runs through there. If you had a bunch of oil on top of your tranny it's probably from the rear half-moon gasket on your head. That rear one likes to leak. Replace the gasket and use some RTV on it.
