odd ball question

odd ball question

so i have a weird idea. I want to put a oil gauge and volt meter out of a 82/83 22r in my 84 tercel with a 3ac. I know i will need the sender. but is the voltmeter hook up anything special?

Are you talking about a live gauge or do you actually want to see the readings in the gauge cluster of the tercel?

the tercel has basic gauges. hence why i want to add. 2 extra gauges. they will be separate than the factory gauges. So I know I need separate senders. i know which oil sender i need, but i didnt know if the earlier trucks used a sender for the volt meter or just hooked in somewhere.

From what I remember, the volt meter just hooks into any positive wire.

There are 4 wires coming out of the gauge, and I really can't remember what they hook to...but I know there was no sending unit. I have the diagram from the 83 FSM posted in this thread. Farther down the page there's a more zoomed-in view of the diagram. If you've tried to figure out how to read one of these before, it should be clear enough what they're tying into.

You can just buy you a generic set of gauges and they will come with everything you need. I think the kit I bought for a piece of heavy equipment actually had metric adapters for the oil and coolant sensors. Most battery gauges just have two wires. Try and hook them into a circuit with a pretty direct path back to the battery. Super easy and about $40 for Oil Pressure, coolant temp and voltage gauges with a mount.

Oh and I think I remember now what the four wires are for. Two for positive and negative for the gauge reading, two for the positive and negative for illumination. Same with the oil pressure. They both have illumination, so another set of wires.

The cheap live gauges I mentioned will just have two wires for each.

I was assuming he already had the gauges but yeah, if not, an aftermarket setup would probably be easier. Not as cool, though.
