motor building or replaceing need input.

Heres my hang up....Im usually up for a replce if i find a low milage motor but i have one and i have the stock motor that needs a rebuild. I have O.C.D. to say the least and leaks of any kind drive me up the wall. I recently replaced the motor of my 87 pick up and the drain plug leaks..dunno why but i have got 2 new drain plugs from the dealer and 3 new crush washers. This week im replacing the pan and gasket.

The 4runner will be perfect!Im replacing everthing with new parts inside and suspension and drive line but my hang up is the motor.I dont want a leak and i dont want to get stupid drips from anything. what would you recomend for doing gaskets one either motor to keep them from leaking or seeping by .Gasket sealer onnew gaskets or no and what sealer if any. i plan on replacing bolts if i pull it apart and timing covers things like that. Would you rebuild the motor that came out OR throw in a motor you dont know if it leaks because its been cleaned to the point of looking new or may be new/rebuilt..Keep in mind im the type of person to wax my bay or door jams.

thanks
Russell

Definitely rebuild the motor that came out of the truck. This makes it easier and less confusing to keep track on particular parts that need to be replaced in the future. Purchase a genuine Toyota service manual if you haven’t already!!

If you take the time to rebuild the motor yourself, this is where your OCD will come to your advantage simply because you'll be extremely meticulous to do the job correctly!!!!

I recommend nothing but OEM gaskets. My 84 Toyota doesn’t leak or seep a drop of anything with the original 22 year old gaskets; they just can't be beat. I have the microfiche slides that the dealer used so I can give you part#'s if you'd like. Once you have the part #, you can get the parts at discounted prices from places like 1sttoyotaparts.com.

Use Toyota FIPG sealer, but only where the factory service manual recommends it.

Engbldr is famous for his quality kits and service. You can find some of his stuff on EBay or at his website.

I usually put silicone on most of my gaskets, just a thin layer... I've had good results so far.

If you're truely OCD, consider doing stainless hardware... I'm only 1/2 OCD - but as you've got a core motor you can go full bore OCD while still having your truck on the road.

Most of my stuff is stainless and powder coat.. Cost does add up though..
