are there any kits for this i have the stock 81 manual steering box and really want power

 

No kits, you will have to buy the parts requires from a junkyard or find a doner vehicle. There are hydraulic assisted steering kits available hovever, if you want to go that route $$$

Might as well grab an IFS box and all while you have it tore down.

 

i did it on my 85 youll need the gearbox steering lines, resivoir and cooler ( the cooler did change in mounting from the different models, but its easy enough to make work) then youll need the pump with the bracket all the bolts, and the most forgotten thing is the crank pulley. the open pulley that is there is the ac pulley, it will work but the belt will be crooked. although i run it that way im sure its best to get it. also the tensioner pulley the bearings seem to constantly go out so check that carefully, also clean all the bolt holes in the head ive seen people strip, break bolts and crack heads by tryin to ram a bolt in a crap filled hole. the whole thing took like 2 hours including removing the other stuff from the donor truck which was in my yard at the time.

This kit works with stock steering, if this is what you are talking about?

Really, that extra pulley is the ac pulley? Darn. But I guess you can make it work if you're ok with a crooked, belt, huh? Why. Why would they put in the pulley for ac, even though the truck doesn't have it, but not the power steering pully? Lame. I've got the whole setup for power steering, just need to install it, but I was assuming that the empty pulley on my crank was the right one. So the power steering pulley sticks out farther than that one?

 

What he is saying is the extra bolt on pulley is for the Power Steering. If you do not have PS or AC, the harmonic balancer still has 2 rows for belts. The inner is for the Alt, and the outer is for AC. I don't think you can use the AC row for the PS belt, even if it was crooked. It would just spin off of there. The proper row to use is the outer bolt on pulley.

 

Ok, so I need to find another pulley to bolt onto my crank, is what you're saying. So there will be three there? The one in middle will have nothing on it (since I don't have ac)?

Because when I grabbed the power steering setup, I got the gearbox, reservoir, hoses, and a pulley that bolts onto a bracket that kind of fits around the alternator somewhere, if I remember right. Is that the pulley you're talking about, or is that just the tensioner?

That is just the tensioner. There is a pulley that bolts onto the end of the harmonic balancer, so instead of just having two pulleys down there, you will have 3. And if you do not have AC, the middle pulley is unused.

yeah you actually can use that a/c pulley its what i do, but if you can im sure it would be better to get the right one, i have had zero problems with mine though, even over the thousands of HARD miles on my truck since the conversion.

I don't think you will need a three row pulley, as my 83 has stock power steering and no A/C. And it only has a two row pulley, and the belt is crooked from the factory.

 

It it NOT crooked from the factory. That is some seriously incorrect information.

Did you buy the truck brand new in 1983? Or are you just assuming because thats the way the truck is now?

 

I don't know about whether the power steering system is stock, as I have only had the truck for a couple years, but it does look stock.

Even so, I have put almost 5k miles on it without the belt jumping off.

Just because the belt hasn't jumped off yet doesn't mean its not on its way out. You have only gone 5k miles, that is not very many miles. In order to have proper puller alignment, you need to have the outer bolt on pulley.

 

The power stering front pulley has 3 pulleys on it, the non powre steering setup only has two pulleys (and will run crooked) you WILL loose belts running that way

 

For the 1979 to 1983 Toyota pickups + some other apps: I found the Trail Gear 130305-1-kit. All complete; some bracket welding required. My solid front axle is stock; so, I had to purchase the 'High Steer' steering arms extra..part number 130002-1-kit. This, total for all items, will set you back around $1400 but is a truly amazing kit. I'm stoked to have it. The Install looks straight forward. I'll keep you all posted as I get to work on the steering. I'm removing both axles for complete rebuild and have ordered all parts from Summit Racing for complete restoration. I've ordered 4.88 complete front and rear 3rd members from 'East Coast Gear' for better response and also more use for my 5th gear with 33" tires installed. Oh, guess I should tell you: My Truck is a 1982 Toyota sr5 4x4 pickup.
