L50 no reverse.

Got to drive my Willy's yesterday, and found out that my transmission has no reverse!

I pulled the tranny top plate a few years back to check for broken teeth, because it kicked out of 3rd, and needed to be held in 4th. I'm pretty sure I got the shift forks back in the correct location, but I guess not.

It shifts through all the gears flawlessly, and doesn't kick out of 3rd anymore like when I first got it.

Is there any kind of writeup or thread with someone rebuilding one of these transmissions?

Also, how do I adjust the clutch? I'm not getting full engagement when I push the pedal, and I have the rod on the firewall master adjusted all the way out almost..

Not that I've seen yet, but I can tell you from first hand experience that if you don't get the forks in right it can do this. In particular there's a reverse fork that has to go in just right. The reverse gear is the one that's low and to the side when you have the cover off. If you take the cover out you'll see what I'm talking about (may be able to upload pics later, I have a spare L45 in my garage)

Sounds like you may need a new clutch soon. I had a similar problem and it ended up being a blown throwout bearing (actually, the springs on the dust cover had a groove worn in them, so it'd be worth taking a look at your clutch dust cover and fork/bearings)

The clutch is actually brand new. Would a clutch being in backwards cause this? I mean, it doesn't slip or anything, I think my pedal might just be hitting the floor before it actually has full engagement. Could a fubar slave cylinder on the firewall cause this? Its a new clutch, bearings, pressure plate and everything

Ill have to wait a while to pull the top cover off the transmission, lastnight I managed to burn my arm on the exhaust and I'm pretty much useless right now.

Yes, it could also be the slave.

Any good way to test it? I mean, I'm pretty sure the thing was working fine. I did have to replace the master though, due to rust.

Anyways, so there's a reverse fork that needs to be on a specific area to shift it. Gotcha.

So as far as the clutch goes there are a few reasons it might not engage:

1. improperly bled/failing master/slave cylinder
2. cracked clutch pedal bracket (I've actually had this issue)
3. improperly installed clutch - not going to presume on this one

You say it's not engaging fully, can you explain what you're experiencing? Could it be worn synchros in the trans itself? You said it shifts through all gears flawlessly, did you mean when it's not running? Or was that a few years ago?

Clutch pedal bracket is good, i know for a fact lol.
I drove my jeep down the road (it has a 22r and L50, toy axles etc..)
I had to adjust the rod on the master all the way out for the clutch to actually engage enough for me to shift gears..
I know the transmission is a bit worn, but when it was in the toyota it actually ran and shifted fine

So, potentially silly question, but are the cylinders and pedal/bracket from the toyota too? It's possible that the arm just isn't traveling enough to engage?

Yep, stripped em right off the cab.
I have a feeling like it might just not be going far enough, because the shape of the floor sort of prevents it from going all the way in.

I might just have to fab up a new end rod for the clutch that's about 1/2" longer or so. But i don't want it to ride the clutch and burn up my brand new clutch :/
