when installing a new cam into the 20r u have to take the head bolts out to remove the cam, so would i have to worry about coolant seeping through/around the head gasket into the combustion chamber? should i drain the coolant out of the motor? any help would be great

i am still wondering if the cam was prehardened at the factory?
ANY other info would be greatly appreciated, i plan on doing this this weekend

 

with this article and the cam instructions i put it in tonight. it took about 3.5 hrs with all of the correct steps and whatnot. trd said that the cam was prehardened so i was good to go. will give a report about if i can feel a diff tomorrow after the rtv is dried.

 

So I see you got the cam Prehardened? You have to break the cam in. The only cam you don't have to break in is roller cams since they are made out of billet steel. Our cams are cast machined. You have to break the cam in! Trust me on this I had that cam in my 22r. Your best combo is gears, header and the max size exhaust of 2 1/4.

Oh and onee more thing, the cam is not made by TRD it is made by Crane Cams. TRD just puts their name on it.

yea i broke it in via the instructions in the box. it still freaked me out when i pulled the head studs and some coolant and oil ran down the block. (when cold). i even practiced on my old motor that was sitting in my shed, and iut did the same thing. trd told me over the phone that they were prehardened so. i have noticed a nice steady power increase across the board. no bogging down. not wow power but i am pleased.
