Has anyone ever heard of this option package on a 1981 pickup?

Hello All,

This is my first post. I've been an appreciator of 1st gen Toyota pickups my whole life.

I just bought a 1981 project truck. It is a 4x4 longbed optioned with a sunroof, bucket seats, 5 speed, and a/c. Black paint, with decals, black interior. The guy who sold it to me is close friends with the original owner and said it was marketed as a "Blackpack" or "Black Pack".

I'm particularly curious because I have read that these options were not made available until 1983. cite: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/

Can anyone tell me what I've got? I'll post some pics soon.

-AF

Your truck is an SR5 "Black Package" optioned model. The package included black paint with stripes, chromed front bumper, grill, side vents, drip rail molding, windshield molding, and oval rear tube bumper. Most came with power steering, tilt wheel steering, and rear sliding window. A/C and the moon roof were additional options but most people opted for them. Bucket seats were standard withe the SR5 model. The first black package was available on late 1979 SR5 truck models.

I forgot, the Black Package also had chromed wheels and caps. The wheels were similar to Appliance Plating's "Wagon" wheel model. I have owned 1979 and 1981 "Black Package" trucks and currently own a 1983 SR5 4x4 Mojave Ltd. Ed.-Black Package shortbed truck but had it custom painted a different color.

Here are a couple of pics. The truck is being shipped to me and won't arrive for about another 10 days or so. I'll post more when it arrives.

Agreed! I'm curious, what part of the country did the truck come from? I'd love to see some interior pics as well.. Congrats, a true original...

It does have some rust, and it needs a new bed. I have not seen it in person yet.

I've had a good experience with uSHip. I listed my shipping as an auction at uSHip and found a nice private shipper who is bringing the truck to me next week. Here is another pic the previous owner sent me. This topper comes with the truck.

Hey Suncomb1,
Where could I find information on the “cowboy editions“?
I purchased a 1979 pickup with a split sunroof and a dome light running in between the windows. Just trying to find more info on the different 4th gen models.
thanks.
