Got my first Toyota Pickup! 1983 4x4!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice I've seen on here so far. I have a few issues to work out with my new truck and it seems most of it has been addressed by you all!

As a side note, I found a guy on craigslist here in the Phoenix area awhile back who is selling a 1980 Toyota 4x4. The engine is sitting in the bed of the truck, but he's only asking $500 for it. I would love to get it, but have neither the time nor money. Let me know and I can forward his info on to you b/c the listing has been taken down.

$500 is a steal even with the engine in the bed. I'd buy it in a heartbeat if I lived closer. Send me his info just in case I go that way for Thanksgiving...

Thanks all! Right now it doesn't start, I drove it on a 3 hour trip home, but now when i try to start, i just hear a clicking on the front passenger side. I'm fairly certain its the starter after reading some of the threads on here tho, I just need time to investigate. It also runs pretty rough (hiccups and such), but my first intuition is to replace the fuel filters. The previous owners also installed some speakers in the doors and right behind the driver and passenger's heads, so I gotta mess with that as well. But I love it, its a beautiful truck!

Yeah, it looks like that, doesn't it? The whole arm thing folds up so the stereo's out of the way if you need to get into the back, or if you want to have a 3rd person in the cab.

Thanks for the advice on the carb and vacuum lines, I will look into that. I took out the starter today and it was bad, so I need to get a new one. The entire engine is covered in oil/grease/mud, so I need to get it all cleaned up so I can actually see what all is going on in there. I'm also planning on moving the stereo b/c I will prolly smash it with my knee or tear the wires out with my foot. Still love it tho!

Also, I need to get it up to code for emissions. How interchangeable are the exhaust parts for 1st and 2nd gen trucks? I've seen some threads here on interchangeable parts, but nothing specifically for that. I also need to repair some of the lights/lenses, are they interchangeable for 1st and 2nd gen?

I also got the most important tool for repairing my truck - the 1983 FSM! Found one on ebay for ~$50!

Thanks guys! I've been really busy with work for the past few months, but I've found time to take out a bunch of the interior for cleaning for now. The motor still sounds terrible and I don't have a good spot to work on it right now, so that is going really slowly. For now I've been reading up on lots of different repairs here on YT, so I'm gaining some knowledge. I've taken some pictures of what I have done to the interior so far, and I will post those later today.

It has been sitting for a while and has a few leaks here and there...

Don't worry, this is just discolored mud from the leak...

I just really need to get hold of a pressure washer for this and the engine...

I was wondering about that. They said it was rebuilt, but it looks different than any of the other 22r motors i've seen on here. I do have some seafoam for it, just haven't used it yet. Any idea what kind of a hybrid/mess this motor is? I can take lots more pictures to try and help

Very nice truck. Can't believe you can just find trucks of that era on craigslist. Living my whole life in the north west I can't tell you the last time I saw a Toyota of that generation.
