GM HEI Ignition

I’m trying to get a new 22R build running. It turns over Ok but I’m getting no spark. It’s an original vacuum advance distributor.

-standard motor products LX301 ignition controller
-standard motor products 1305 coil
wired B to battery and + on coil, c to - on coil, w to white distributor wire, g to brown distributor wire, ground post on ignition controller grounded to motor.

battery is grounded to motor and I’m getting good power and ground to the ignition controller.

im not currently running a 1k resistor as some say to do. I have no heat sink installed but plan to get one.

any idea??

I was able to get this setup to spark off vehicle as seen in video. It was working fine. Then it stopped working. I disconnected and reconnected the battery and it worked again.

hooked it up to the engine, no spark. Hooked back up to the drill, and I’m getting no ground signal to the negative post on the coil while the distributor is turning.

which indicates the igniter is bad or the pickup coil is no good. Tested pickup coil, has 150 ohms with fluctuating numbers with distributor turning.

im leaning towards trying another GM HEI igniter. Even though this one is brand new.

a frustrating situation. New to system testing…. Open to learning.

Well for anyone interested…. I gave up. It would work then not work. Couldn’t figure out why.

Found a used Toyota coil and igniter…. Fired up instantly and runs perfect. Hard not to stick with the oem.

Another installer mentioned the pickup coil air gap needing tighter clearance for the gm igniter.

which is logical. Currently I’m running smooth on vintage Toyota parts to I have no need to change.

DUI…. Nice.

It is, but it looks massive when you open the hood

This DUI also eliminates the need for the igniter also? (Is that what they are referring to as the ‘module’?)

Yup, it is all contained in the unit. I used some weatherhead (GM) wiring connectors and used the factory wiring for both the tach and power to the dist. If I have to go back to the OE toyota ign. I just swap the dist and plug it in. Plug wires stay with the dist being used
